Remarkably atmospheric and distressing.

Keep in mind it isn't just Ohio that looks like this.

Great moody shots, I miss the Great Lakes/rustbelt region.

Looks are deceptive! The unofficial unemployment rate here in Las Vegas during the recession is estimated to be over 22%, but you'd never know it from visiting here, thanks to our 4 inches of rain a year, which helps to keep everything looking rather new, even if it were built in the 50's.

If Las Vegas had the climate of Ohio............................................what this city would look like!!!

Crippling depression, anyone?

This is soul-stirring...and weird.

It's amazing to think how far back the history of Cleveland's industrial areas goes. I believe Rockefeller's first refineries were there, in the 1870s.

At least - unlike Pittsburgh - there is still a major functioning steel mill in Cleveland!

So America is a disaster based just on a few photos?

I don't know what pictures a lot of people are seeing.

For me, this set doesn't show a place that is specially rundown, depressed or in a recesion state.

There are a lot of pictures of factories, warehouses and industrial areas, well, they aren't pretty, industrial areas are never pretty, for sure, but they seem to be working, only on a few you can tell, maybe, that they are abandoned.

There are some residential areas, certanily not fancy nor in the better shape, but they don't look like slums either.

And not to mention that absolutely every single picture is taken with an overcast weather, there is not even one picture with a blue sky. If you retake a lot of this pictures, exactly the same take, but with a sunny weather, will tell another story. If you want to make Disneyland look depressing, just took a picture of it in a rainy day.

I like the photos but I think the problem is with the title of the thread. Ohio has many faces, including nice ones.

Having spent more than my share of gloomy days in western NY, this all looks very fimilar. That being said I think the soul crushing nature of those photos comes mostly from the weather and/or the time of day that they were captured.

Only a few of them show all that much true decay.

Having spent a considerable amount of time in Ohio, you definitely captured what a good part of winter can feel like. It can be pretty rough...

It's always interesting to see threads bumped from the past; this in particular is a hoot because it covers so much of the area I grew up in (small town/eastern Appalachian Ohio) and where I've made my home (inner city Cleveland). I appreciate the small town I grew up in, but I knew it would never be a place I could stay.

Mind you, being 40 and gainfully employed for almost 20 years in Greater Cleveland, I can sympathize but I can't subscribe to the "unemployed, underemployed or felt frustrated and trapped" notion. I've been able to make a decent life for myself in Cleveland and then some. I admit that by end of January, the weather *will* get to you but that's when it's time to jet off to a sunny locale and before you know it, it's springtime

When I think of Ohio in my head, it's always sunny cornfields or brand new freeway super rest-areas. Probably because I'm from Michigan. If I had a decent camera I could show you all what depressing really means
