8080 Sunset / 8150 Sunset / Hayvenhurst / Garden of Allah Hotel

What's that on top . . . two dragonflies mating?

Yes, that's right - Nazimova came to Hollywood in 1918 after signing a purported $13,000 per week contract for Louis B. Mayer at Metro Pictures and set about looking for a suitable movie-star mansion. She settled on the one that stood at 8080 Sunset Blvd. It was named Havenhurst by real estate developer William H. Hay.

He built it in 1913 for his wife, but she didn't like it so the poor sod had to build another place, which he did on the site of what is now the Directors Guild building. Nazimova bought a 99-year lease on the place for $65,000 and spent another $65,000 giving it a makeover, thus turning it into what we're more familiar with as the main building of the Garden of Allah Hotel at 8150 Sunset, which opened in January 1927.

During the intervening years Hayvenhurst was where Nazzy held her Saturday evening salons where interesting people gathered to talk about interesting things -- and a legend was born.

A tunnel between the Roosevelt Hotel and Yamashiro Restaurant...?

I recently posted this photo on my website:

https://martinturnbull.com/2017/07/0...december-1953/

and it attracted this comment about a tunnel between the Roosevelt Hotel and Yamashiro Restaurant.

I've never heard of such a tunnel. Does anybody know anything about it, or is it just an urban rumor?

The 'net has quite a bit on the sign, but nothing in depth. Installed for a 1920s hardware store they say:

I'm impressed. I never managed anything like that. I just made the same rainbow cake over and over.

Here's another educational subject from Julius Shulman. It's "Job 4786: Robert Evans Alexander, California Institute of Technology, Baxter Hall (Pasadena, Calif.), 1971".

This interesting hole in the roof is above the entrance.

There's a matching hexagonal skylight above the stairwell.

The last two images appear to show a library/study area.

There are a couple of sculptures dotted around the room. I've also just noticed that the hexagonal theme continues in the ceiling.

All from Getty Research Institute

The first image above shows the side of the Beckman Auditorium, which we saw in post #39730. The trees have grown outside Baxter Hall, but the building looks unchanged.

The postmark (and the sender) tells us this is Los Angeles.

The writing is in Swedish.

I think it says:

Miss Erikson: God's Peace [to you]. Because I promised that I would send you a postcard of church, so now I carry out my promise. Many best wishes that you are well. John S. Larson.

The Tabernacle was at Francisco and Lincoln which is now next to the Harbor Freeway one block west of Figueroa around 8th Street.

Thanks for your help Lorendoc. I appreciate it.

The tabernacle appears on the 1921 baist map below.

I don't remember seeing Corydon Drive.

I wonder why it takes that huge jog?

update:

Corydon Drive has only been mentioned once before on the thread.

I couldn't find them on the thread, e_r, but I seem to remember you posted some 1920s photos of the area around the
Swedish Tabernacle (Francisco, Florida, Lincoln, 8th). They may have been ebay photos. They had specific locations and
dates (e.g., "West on Lincoln from Francisco, July 6, 1924"). Do you remember? Perhaps someone else posted them.

Mystery Location

Where are these Pacific Electric buses being serviced in this undated photo?

UCLA/Islandora (link not always available)

Left half enlargement:

Right half enlargement; based on the cars in the distance at the right center edge, I guess the photo was taken in the early to mid-30s:

I'm wondering about the mural in the Children's record section. It bears a striking resemblance to a Mary Blair work.

Archetypal silent film production facilities. No evidence of Mayflower. Plenty of light, au naturale.

Location and identities unk. http://hdl.huntington.org/cdm/single...0coll2/id/2971

Closer look at what appears to be film lab entrance. No smoke near nitrate stock!

I thought I'd finish the week with a mystery location from Julius Shulman. It's "Job 4546: Carl Maston, Kengott Brosmer offices, 1969". I've left out a similar shot. I believe the car is an Alfa Romeo GTV.

At least there's a street number, but I'm not sure of the second digit. It could be 2340, 2540 or 2840.

Here's a look back at the street from the parking lot.

I'm guessing that this is the building behind the parking lot.

This is the view from the top of the stairs. I've also omitted a ground-level view of this room.

The last image gives a clue to the line of business. It looks like signage or shop-fitting.

All from Getty Research Institute

My Googling turned up virtually nothing, and I don't even know if it's in LA. Can anyone help?

Thanks, GW. When I checked your address in the 1973 CD, I found that the company was apparently named "Kenngott-Brossmer Inc" and not "Kengott Brosmer". No wonder I couldn't find it! They seem to have been a design studio. The 1987 CD lists Soundcastle Recording Studios at 2840 Rowena Avenue.

I checked the historic GSV images, and found that the building was covered by plants until recently.

I am pretty sure this is PE's Macy Street Yard. The building in the right background of photos one and three is the carbarn. Compare with: http://www.pacificelectric.org/pacif...ict/car-barns/

Cheers,
Jack

Yes, I can see that the photo at the link you provided shows the same buildings. Thank you!
