Sweet. From the diagram it looks as if the 511 foot mark is at the top of the residential units, and does not include the mechanical penthouse, so this tower could be even taller.

Or it may simply be a misleading error on the diagram.

I hope this goes through, i personally would enjoy having Burnaby, not Surrey, building Metro-Vancouver's first true suburban skyscraper. (Going by the term of 150m+ as a true sky scraper)

150+ meters in Burnaby??? I never thought I'd see the day.

What I don't understand is, with all the towers in Burnaby, what prevented them from going taller before?

150 is actually pretty tall, 200 is the ideal, but then, around this region, only surrey can do such things, if they ever will....

van's towers feel taller than their actual height somehow, i think it's due to compacted floors, and slim style...

this image is a goodie! .... this project will do wonders for Metrotown. give it a nice point and also fix that empty pot mark at Willington & Kingsway that has been there for over a decade.

Hopefully one day the strip mall and the lot with the gas station and moving trucks gets redeveloped too. Would be a nice intersection.

Oh thank goodness! The original render/design was blocky and awful - namely the prominent setback above the hotel floors. This current look is much more pleasing to the eye, and more skyscraper-esque. Do it, Burnaby!

Looks good.
I like how the tower appears to be on stilts just above the podium.
Not that keen on the oversized grid, especially when layered on and interwoven with the balconies.
The podium looks good.

Agreed that the Esso Station and the strip mall with the IGA suburbanize the area.

Here's the Burnaby SSP diagram - although CentrePointe is not on it.
Metrotower II is 111.3 m.

http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?searchID=49448215

SSP says CentrePointe is 108.0m (Emporis is similar at 108.6 m)
http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=36048

The MetroPlace website (the condo to be built next to Metrotown Station) says it will be 46 storeys.
http://metroplaceliving.ca/metroplace/the-building/

Does anyone know which will be taller?

I saw poster ads at a few skytrain stations today for this project, nice to see they are really starting to push for this project. Fingers crossed for BC' first true skyscraper outside of Vancouver proper!

Demolition has commenced on the Big Lai restaurant building. As I walked home at around midnight, about half of the building had been torn down.

As I walked home I noticed the following:
Most of the Big Lai building has been torn down.
Hoarding is being erected on the old gas station lot.
The more substantial building next door is being stripped down.

Nice height for this building, however the 388 square foot studios they are selling... Starting @ $259k. That is kind of small

Floor plans are here www.bosaproperties.com/sovereign/greathomes

^ Not too concerned about the size of the unit, but $670/sq ft does seem a bit pricy for Willingdon and Kingsway. I can find units priced around there on Wall Centre False Creek's pricing, a more desirable neighborhood one would think - e.g.:

#502: 417 sq ft. 1BR - $280K = $671/sq ft.

Presumably Bosa knows the market though...

Big Lai building is now rubble.
While there are people working on the larger building, they are putting a big poster on the Kindsway side, so it's not going to be demolished soon.

The bigger building is not being demolished because it is being renovated to become the presentation and sales centre.

SOVEREIGN unveiled at "VIP" Open House Feb. 8, 2011 - Details here

As promised in an earlier post, I sought out additional details on the
SOVEREIGN Tower. Fresh info, with six photos are posted on one of my Blogs:
http://therunagatesclub.blogspot.com/

Tonight (FEB 8) was the first of three "opens" before Sales begin.
This one was billed as the "VIP Open", meaning Realtors with
more than ten Buyers in tow. To its credit, Bosa Properties is
limiting Sales to ONE apartment per Purchaser. Sometimes marketing
people do play fair. This is one of those times.

My article includes info on the Hotel, and equally important, how
the architect deals with ingress and egress to a a very active tower
located on one of Burnaby's busiest intersections.
Cheers!
Ron in Burnaby

thanks for the post Ron!

The scale model for the SOVEREIGN tower seemed to draw even more interest than the display suites. At 511.4 feet it will be Burnaby's first true skyscraper. I was told that Bosa plans to begin excavation in three months time.

nice stuff!

also Ron you state

In keeping with the landmark status of the SOVEREIGN, the tower designer- Chris Dikeakos Architects Inc, have conceived a very dramatic residential entrance off of McKay Street.

are you sure .... as http://goo.gl/maps/Ng8W it looks like its off HAZEL

Thanks Hollywood North! I wrote from notes, without checking. You are right.
It is Hazel. By the way, I was on the site today and took a few more photos.
I just updated the Blog. I don't think I am going too far out on a limb sharing my thoughts. I plan a potted comparison of the twin towers soon ... SOVEREIGN and METROPLACE that is. The cost per square foot in SOVEREIGN is painful, but if Bosa had taken deposits Tuesday and this afternoon, it would already be sold out. There is incredible appetite for these two towers.

I hope you are right about excavation beginning in a few months. With the Georgia topping out soon we need the construction of a tall tower to observe on this forum, hehe.
