The Forgotten Chicago Facebook page reports that O'Brien's on Wells is being demo'd to make way for that hotel.

Its a shame too. The tower is turning out really nice
Agreed. That fact that it faces the Eisenhower probably played into that calculus. What does it look like from the other side? Is there also a huge, blank-walled podium fronting Van Buren?

those brick blank walls you see are typically fire code requirements, things x feet from adjoining properties have to be certain fireproof materials

I would like to see this one from the street, considering this is the view from the Eisenhower, it doesn't look all that bad, I sort of see the podium as a tribute to the John Hancock building

Wasn't everyone thrilled last month with how the podium looked for 1035??? The blank wall sucks, but firecode, and the building overall is a great addition to the area.

I agree the building is a nice edition, but the podium is still awful.

I don't dislike the podium, it's the same height as the neighboring buildings and abuts a freeway. It's well detailed and integrated into the overall aesthetic of the tower to boot. Sure it would be nice if it were an underground parking garage, but, as we all know, that just doesn't happen in Chicago.

I think it's well done aesthetically for a giant parking garage, but I wonder if they couldn't line it with active uses for the side facing Van Buren given how tall/how much volume there is in it.

Wicker Park Connection

Tower crane base as of yesterday at Wicker Park Connection. Mat poured, ready to party. At 12 stories, this one will be a monstrosity on Division. Another 3 floors after the set back will create some really good height for the area with the Tower of Pizza Hut

I noticed while reading a mention of the Wendy's closing across from Chase Tower that apparently the building it was in has been sold. Would it be possible to wedge a new high rise in there if both it and the adjoining low-rise were demolished?

^Goes a long way indeed! That lighting will really improve the grungy, under-L experience. Can't wait to check it out at night.

The 150 Riverside thread appears closed, so.....

You know a new building has struck a nerve when people give it nicknames like "The Tuning Fork" or "The Guillotine." Or when the building appears alongside the likes of Willis Tower and Marina City on tour-boat posters that tout a chance to see Chicago's architectural icons.

150 North Riverside, the slope-bottomed riverfront office tower that officially opens Thursday, is the boldest, most eye-grabbing Chicago skyscraper since Jeanne Gang's curvaceous Aqua Tower debuted in 2009. Its base, which flaunts sloping diagonal columns and glass walls that look blade-sharp, raises the question: Why did they do it that way? People also have been heard to wonder whether a strong puff of wind might blow the high-rise over.

The most important question, though, centers on whether this 54-story high-rise is a genuine synthesis of structure, function and form, not just eye candy.

Never once heard either of those references... not once until this writing: Maybe there is an alt.skyscraper forum.
