Port Moody has some very well entrenched NIMBYs. Trying to get anything through is like pulling teeth. It feels like 50% or less of proposed projects actually get built.

Port Moody's acting mayor wants more jobs — not more towers — around SkyTrain hub

Quote:
He's only been Port Moody's acting mayor for two weeks, but Hunter Madsen isn't wasting time putting forward his vision for the city.

"If this seems like a bold plan, it's only because it attempts to encourage the city to confirm the focus it knows it needs to have," said Madsen.

Madsen's proposal involves a three block long area surrounding Moody Centre SkyTrain station, which is anticipated to undergo significant change in the coming years.

Entitled "More than a Bedroom Community! Building a Tech & Innovation Hub that Revitalizes Port Moody with Great Jobs!", Madsen's report advocates the following:
  • The city establish the area around Moody Centre as "a dynamic new business hub for the advancement of sustainable clean technologies, innovation, and the sciences."
  • The city change its Official Community Plan to include job creation targets in the area, while also clarifying that "densified housing and residential amenities" would not define it.
  • Staff report on "options to hold development" in the area until the new plan is established.
Council will vote Tuesday evening on whether to adopt the report.

Madsen is the second councillor to fill in as mayor while Rob Vagramov takes an indefinite leave while contesting a sexual assault charge. Madsen will be in the position until the end of September.

He said orienting Moody Centre around jobs is critical to reversing the trend of fewer and fewer Port Moody residents working with the city limits.

"If a community is to be a complete community, that means people can live and work and play here," he said.

...

But Madsen's proposal was sharply criticized by Coun. Diana Dilworth, who said it was inappropriate to change the Moody Centre plans ahead of the OCP review.

"We're opening up the entire OCP by the end of the year to start conversations about what neighbourhoods like," she said.

"It's a ridiculous notion that we're going to direct staff to drop everything now to complete his proposed [actions] ... he's doing this with no respect for our taxpayers, no respect for any public consultation, no respect for the property owners and no respect for for council."

Dilworth alleged Madsen hadn't spoken with property owners in the area before putting forward his proposal, and that his report ignored ongoing discussions taking place between those owners and the city, province, and TransLink.

"What's the hurry? You're not sitting down with these property owners," she said.

"The bigger question is Mr. Madsen's been acting mayor for two weeks. What is this really all about?"

Can the acting mayor really wild such power?

People in Port Moody like to think they are an isolated little Village close to the big city when they are a part of the big city. Time to face reality.

Randomly changing policy and erratic political behaviour is not going to entice more businesses to the City...

Port Moody has set a tone that is not business friendly and I don't think moves like this make it any better.

Condos proposed for Port Moody’s western entrance

It’s not quite the highrise future that was once envisioned for Port Moody’s western entrance, where the Barnet Highway, St. Johns Street and Clarke Road intersect, but a new condo development comprised of 163 units in two six-storey buildings will go before the city’s community planning advisory committee Tuesday.

The project is being proposed by Bold Properties Ltd. for a site below St. George Street, just west of the vacant lot where the old Barnet Hotel used to sit.

Good news if that huge empty expanse of asphalt can get redeveloped. Hopefully the plan will include some through streets to improve the street grid in the downtown Coquitlam area.

yeah that seems to be the plan.

I wonder why the Coquitlam chapters hasn't renovated and rebranded as indigo as its one of the last in the Vancouver area I think to not be an indigo, they must be waiting for that shopping place to get redeveloped too, maybe they will move and reopen as indigo in the phase 1 of Coquitlam Centre.

Poco also is looking to redevelop that shopping place that has Michaels and Pier 1. They seem to want to have 4-7 towers I think it is. They will need to tie the roads in together with that much more going in that area.

Seems like Burnaby will be getting a new hospital:

Burnaby Hospital to get $1.3-billion redevelopment, including two new towers

B.C. Premier John Horgan announced a $1.3-billion redevelopment of the aging Burnaby Hospital today, adding more beds and two new patient-care towers.

In a noon announcement, Horgan said the project will impact every part of the existing hospital campus.

The two new patient-care towers will offer new wards and operating rooms, a total of almost 400 beds – the majority in single rooms – and a new cancer treatment centre.

Burnaby Hospital, built in 1952, currently has 297 beds and hasn’t been upgraded in more than 40 years...

A residential complex featuring two towers and two low-rises is being proposed to replace a longtime Lougheed Highway car lot.

Representatives of Ledingham McAllister appeared before Coquitlam council Monday to provide initial details on a proposal to build highrises of 29 and 25 storeys, a five-storey low-rise and a four-storey building with 10 townhouses. Alderson Gate would be built at 688 Lougheed Hwy. — which is currently home to a used car dealership and formerly housed Brian Jessel BMW — with a total of 571 units, including 159 for market rentals.

Artistic rendering of the South Britannia surf park resort community near Squamish. (South Britannia)

A new resort community anchored by a world-class surf park attraction could provide Squamish and the wider Sea to Sky Corridor with another beacon for tourism generation and economic activity.

Tiger Bay Development (TGD) has submitted a rezoning application to Squamish Lillooet Regional District to develop a significant gravel pit site just south of Britannia Mine Museum along the Sea to Sky Highway.

The ambitious project, named South Britannia, covering the area either side of the highway, plans to remediate 116 acres of brownfield land reinstate 31 acres as forest. Overall, 43% of the site will be dedicated to parks, greenways, and natural areas.
