It would be a perfect spot for Winnipeg's civic museum. Basically a physical version of this subforum with elaborate displays on Winnipeg's history from a social, natural, architectural, urban, transportation and whatever else other standpoint you can think of. Replete with a reading room filled with historical resources, and a community auditorium.

Dare to dream...

We basically have that in the Winnipeg archives... Only the building is falling apart as well.

^ Archives doesn't really function as a museum though, although I suppose with enough money the building could be repurposed to suit that role. If there ever is a civic museum it would be better if it weren't directly affiliated with the City of Winnipeg.

This could be a great addition to the Manitoba Museum.

Agreed.

That's pretty much what's already been happening in the exchange and now along Graham.

After the Public Safety Building
by Robert Galston

With the demise of the Public Safety Building a near certainty after a Winnipeg city council committee decided to not pursue rehabilitation of the structure, the question now is: what will become of the site after the limestone-clad modernist building encounters the wrecking ball?

The PSB has recently come to be considered a heritage building by advocates and architecture preservationists, though it is a relatively new addition (built in 1965) to a site that first came into use as a public space more than 140 years ago.

Construction has begun on a memorial for the General Strike at Market/Lily. Haven't seen the winning design yet though.

Great idea, and far more appropriate a commemoration than the inane idea to recreate Victoria Park.

Pretty sure this is part of the larger plan to mark historic places all over the Exchange and have self-guided walking tours. The plan was shown in one of those big Exchange District studies as part of all the streetscaping improvements in the area over the next couple years.

I'd love to see that.

For others reference, it was at the foot of Market St (where the Impark office is now) before being moved in 1948 to Higgins (it was moved again in 1994). Here's a photo of it shortly before it was moved. The building you can see immediately behind it on the right hand side of the picture is the one that contains Union Sound Hall.

Forgot to mention as well that installation began last week on what I assume are balcony supports at ground level on Galpern. (Perhaps stair supports for private entrances?)

While I'm so happy this project actually happened, and looks amazing, I am just slightly sad that there isn't at least one CRU fronting onto McDermot or Rorie there.

I find Ross House to be so fascinating. I think of what it 'saw' sitting it's original location from the early 1850's to 1947/8. When it was build, it was sitting beside a creek on essentially empty, windswept prairie. Then a residential neighbourhood was built around it in the 1870-1882 period. Within another 20 years, the residences were almost all gone and the area had become a warehouse/industrial district.

And, almost miraculously, we still have the place!
