And our most famous, George Street. It's a back lane of Water Street and, until pretty recently, historically at least, was just that - industrial back/servants entrances and the like. I don't think it was even paved until the 80s.

I confess that as a child I was confused by the local history museum. They had a narrow hallway lined with little replica stores. I thought everything in the olden days was little like that, and loved the idea. Therefore I love a good retail alley to this day.

Nickels Arcade is the winner for most beautiful alley in Michigan. Here's a few more Michigan alleys, from Kalamazoo:
