I wonder if this foreign investment is a perfect storm situation given our decent growth in housing construction, housing prices, and population, with other factors such as low interest rates, weaker $CAN, ongoing need for foreign investors to 'tax shelter', and an additional choice in markets outside of TO and VanCity and the other major centres.

Might this lead to a similar situation which is seen in TO and Van, in which some condos are nearly empty of occupants, and simply used as an investment vehicle?

This is literally an entirely new trend for Winnipeg. From .01% to 2.7% in one year. Where we go down the road in 5-10 years will give us a better idea. I quite like the idea of foreign investors taking an interest in this city.As well, you have to remember condo purchases this year are down nearly 30% here, with the 150K-200K price range being the top seller, similar to The latest info on SkyCity. There is currently a glut of units on the market.

1M CN Rail wheels to be manufactured at Winnipeg plant

Railway signs contract with Amstead Rail to produce wheels at Griffin Wheel Company

Canadian National says a new long-term contract with Amsted Rail will result in one million wheels being manufactured at Griffin Wheel Company's Winnipeg plant for use at CN's Transcona mechanical facility.
The rail company announced the new contract on Thursday, saying the wheels will be produced in the Winnipeg facility over the next 10 years.
Griffin Wheel's Winnipeg plant is one of Amsted Rail's five wheel manufacturing plants in North America and the only one in Canada, CN said in a news release.

Yes. I am quite anxious to witness the vibrancy along this stretch when the Galpern building is fully occupied.

great Air Canada is bringing in some of their suppliers into the Winnipeg market and create around 150 jobs, unfortunately AVEOS employees were highly paid, highly skilled aerospace jobs and I HEAR (not confirmed) that these will be mostly lower paid warehouse jobs.

We haven't had AVEOS jobs for years though, and we weren't getting them back. At this point, this is win, win.

Not sure where to put this but went for a walk a lunch and walked thru the Concord hotel's parking lot, man what a dump. The couple pics i took really dont show how broken down and nasty this place is. I'm wondering how much longer this thing is going to stand for and WHO actually stays there lol.

Old mattresses outside
Toilet bowls outside
Graffiti tags
15+ old broken down cars in the back of the parking lot
The parking lot is destroyed by erosion
Exterior of building is in really bad shape
Missing/broken signage

Whats the point of this post? Nothing much, just an eyesore that i hope gets dealt with sooner than later. Its such a prime location for crying out loud!

It is among a long list of sites in the city needing attention. Sad.

Veering way off topic but the mention of grafetti being a sign this place I a dump is a good thing about Winnipeg. My wife is from Montreal so I go there often. I'm always surprised by the sheer amount of grafeti everywhere. And its not like just run down places. You'll see it on apartment buildings in decent neighbourhoods.

Until a little over 20 years ago, the Concord was just another local hotel/vendor/watering hole, but around then it really started to go downhill to the point where it is now. Every time I drive by I can't help but notice what an eyesore it has become.

I would imagine that the owner is just sitting on it waiting for the right offer to come along... what else could the game plan be at this point?

Metro stations, the whole nine yards. It's hideous.

Cities in Europe are just as bad, nothing like seeing ugly graffiti on 500 year old buildings, sick that European youth feel the need to emulate US ghetto life!
