[June 2010] Earthquake in Ottawa

Don't know how powerful it was but ten minutes ago (1:39 EST approx.) The earth moved in Ottawa. My floor dropped 2 or 3 inches under my feet! the whole place was on waves. Everyone on my street ran out of their buildings!

More to come I'm sure!

It was certainly felt here in Toronto too. Our 100 year old building was not feeling too sturdy. Sounds like it was centred closer to Ottawa though.

A quick description of what I felt:

The whole thing lasted a little less than 20 seconds.

First it was like the sound of a very large truck rumbling on the street out side. That lasted 2 or 3 seconds.

Then the first big drop when the floor fell about 2 inches and the whole place dropped: The building groaned. 1 or 2 seconds.

Then the sensation of rolling on waves. Bobbing up and down for the next while, slowly tapering off. Like being on a small boat when a larger boat's wake passes you by. That lasted the remaining 10 seconds or so.

IMO it must be a 6 on the Richter Scale at least.

BTW, what's with that map? It shows both Laval and Longueuil, but not Montreal or Ottawa?

That is me.

Yup. My townhouse shook back and forth a bit. Lasted about 25 seconds. Pictures moved, but nothing serious. Put down the laptop and considered grabbing the dog and heading outside, but it calmed down right away.

It felt like a plane or truck driving by here in Aylmer. Lights flickered a bit. Shit my pants, somewhat.

Earthquake in Ottawa:

-Loud rumbling noise as if a freight truck was passing by, sound grows louder
-Loud Bang and house jumps a few cm
-Violent Shaking, house and ground visually shaking (15 seconds)
-Tapering off (20 seconds)
-The front of my pants become ever so slightly damp

I will probably never forget my utter confusion and terror when I was bounced into the air and saw the entire world moving. The ground, the one thing that is always still and firm, moved like waves on water and it's the most unsettling feeling.

BTW, do these quakes have aftershocks?

I just bolted out of the building, I'm up on the 5th floor and everything was shaking and than it began to shake even harder, so that's when I knew something was wrong.

All the office buildings in downtown Ottawa are being evacuated so they can check for gas leaks. Typical Government town. Those employees get the afternoon off when a leaf falls off a tree.

Your Tax dollars at work. Civil Servants only work 3 days a week, get 9 weeks sick leave, have every holiday including ones that are only found on a Hindu calendars and still make 90,000 a year.

Rant over

Crazy.. I was in my basement and the walls just vibrated loudly for like 20 seconds. Were you downtown??
