MIAMI | New Courthouse (Flagler Street) | FT | FLOORS

Brightline Developer Proposes Glassy New Courthouse Tower On Flagler Street

Quote:
MiamiCentral and Brightline’s parent company, Florida East Coast Industries, is proposing to build a tall, narrow courthouse tower for Dade County.

FECI, along with affiliates of Hunt Construction and Moss Construction are part of New Flagler Courthouse Development Partners, which submitted an unsolicited proposal last month.

The new courthouse would be located on Flagler Street. Renderings appear to place it on a narrow, county-owned lot just west of the current courthouse and just south of the MiamiCentral supertowers.

FECI says they have already invested over $1 million in planning the new courthouse. Two possible designs by architect NBWW, one for 600,000 square feet and one for 450,000 square feet were submitted.

Gene Stearns an attorney who has been advocating for a new building, told Dade commissioners at a meeting yesterday that the current courthouse facilities are “third world” and an “embarrassment.”

At the meeting, commissioners voted to proceed with negotiations with FECI, while also issuing an RFQ to other possible developers. Mayor Carlos Gimenez opposed both the negotiations and the proposed site, saying he preferred a location next to the Children’s Courthouse and didn’t want FECI to have a perceived edge over competitors.

I haven't heard anything on that particular design in ages. That was suppose to be residential functionality. Looks like it was part of the court house redevelopment. I'd probally archive it.

Looks like there is co ownership of the lots used for this project. I don't think its happening (54 Flagler)

Winner Announced for $260M Miami-Dade Courthouse Bid

Quote:
Tutor Perini Corp. has been selected as the design-build contractor in a public-private partnership (P3) tapped to build the new Miami-Dade County Civil and Probate Courthouse in Miami, in a project estimated to cost more than $260 million.

The courthouse, which will be built on Flagler Street next to the existing 1928 facility, will provide more than 600,000 square feet of space and services for the Eleventh Judicial Court of Florida, the Clerk of Courts and other related court partners and agencies. The project will include construction of more than 46 jury courtrooms and shell space for an additional four jury courtrooms; a parking area with secure parking for 59 vehicles; site development, including necessary utilities and utility improvements to support the new courthouse; hardscape/landscape; and road and traffic control improvements. Work is expected to begin in January, with substantial completion slated for early 2024.

I like this design but it is the second ranked proposal not the first. The county has moved the vote to Dec. 17.

CONSTRUCTION WILL BEGIN IN FEBRUARY ON NEW 23-STORY CIVIL COURTHOUSE IN DOWNTOWN MIAMI

Quote:
Dade’s new civil courthouse is set to break ground next month in downtown Miami after county commissioners voted to finalize a deal to build it.

Groundbreaking is set for February, a spokesperson for the developer told the Herald after the December 18 commission vote.

Plenary Group of Australia will develop the 23-story building and then operate it for 30 years, in a public-private partnership.

Miami-Dade won’t make any payments until the building is completed. The county will then make payments starting at $25 million per year if the developer meets certain operating metrics.

Several other bids that came in significantly more expensive were rejected.

The existing courthouse dating to 1928 is so rundown that it has not had a certificate of occupancy since 1976, according to Law.com.

The historic courthouse will likely be sold and repurposed. County commissioners have pledged it will be preserved and restored.

HOK is the architect for the new tower. Tutor Perini is the contractor.

Completion is expected in early 2024.
