Historic apartment building wins national award

As affordable-rate units expire or are built over, the city of Portland desperately struggles to retain — or build more — low-income housing with a variety of strategies that in this case, won a national award.

The Bronaugh Apartments, a historic three-floor building located at 1434 S.W. Morrison St., won the 23rd annual Charles L. Edson Tax Credit Excellence Award in the HUD Preservation Category. The building is home to elderly and disabled Oregonians who live on fixed incomes.

REACH Community Development Corporation (CDC) accepted the award in Washington, D.C., in early June.

"The Bronaugh Apartments are a prime example of how the low-income housing credit helps preserve affordable homes to Americans who need it the most," said U.S. Senator Ron Wyden. "REACH did an outstanding job of leveraging the housing credit to attract public and private investments critical to ensuring that more Oregon families, seniors and veterans would have a roof over their head and be safe. Congratulations to all of the partners involved on this well-deserved national recognition."
...continues at the Business Tribune.

Notice of a Pre-Application Conference for 1715 SW Salmon, the site that would have been home to the Allegro.

Seven stories is better than none.

I tend to like the 6-10 story buildings as the norm for Goose Hollow although I am all about the Press Blocks tower height sprinkled through the area - especially right along the light rail. Mixing it up is good!

Honestly, I have to agree. From 14th-18th it should be 6-10 story buildings with some towers sticking out.

So would this be the first downtown development to go through the new IZ rules?

It could be. Other potentials:
  • New Omni
  • Zidell Block 8
  • Artists Rep redevelopment
  • 815 W Burnside

Wow - Home grown Oregon boy here has never seen a school with more than 3 stories, and that is rare. Thanks for the document and update!

Good on PPS, this is a worthy upgrade. Although...I am slightly disappointed this won't be built on a freeway cap over the 405.

So basically it would be flipping the layout of the school and grounds, and put the high school on the western side. It doesn't look like it opens up any land to be developed. Hopefully the Simpsons sidewalk will be preserved.
