Thank our forefathers for putting the damn things too close to the cities without thought to building height limits.

Dallas has a 1000' limit cause of Love Field.

During a meeting with Turnberry residents, Crown Las Vegas officials told residents the project could be turned into shorter, duel hotel towers, depending upon the FAA's ruling.

Well, we've gone down from a proposal for an 1,800 foot tower to an 1,100 one down to talk of two towers that are very unlikely to be as tall as one would have been.

As much as I would personally love to see a supertall in Las Vegas... I can't help wondering if this developer hasn't used talk of supertall statistics as little more than a marketing gimmick. I'm starting to suspect we've been had.

FAA says 1,064 feet is the max.

Milam has to file an appeal by December 19 or the decision becomes final.

Clark County Commissioners were scheduled to hold a hearing on the project today, but the item was held pending appeals.

The new height recommendation replaces an earlier FAA decision arguing that any structure on the site that was higher than 708 feet would pose a hazard to air traffic in the area.

I say build twin 1064 ft towers and call it a day. Beating out the Stratosphere by 1 foot is weak anyway. At that height, it'll still be the tallest skyscraper on the strip and it's top floor should be well above the 921 ft roof line of the Stratosphere -- so they could claim the highest observation deck should they choose to have one.

1064 ft is 322 m that is not small. If they built that high it would be the tallest building in America outside of New York or Chicago. It would be taller than the Chrysler building.

2 of them would make them the tallest twin hotel towers in the world, or tallest twin buildings in the Western Hemisphere. Not bad.

It was not held over today and they actually finally appeared before the Clark County Planning Commission.

I was watching it on closed circuit TV and they said they are going to go ahead with the 1,064 foot height approved by the FAA and they said that the airport approved it too.

They also said it will probably now be twin towers, but that they will have to come back for another design review on that later.

Then I was rudely interupted and missed the last part of the hearing and didn't see if the planning commission actually voted for approval or not. Did anyone catch the last part of the hearing?

Yes they approved it.

I was hoping for something taller than the Stratosphere, but twin 1,064 ft towers would be nice.

Awesome!

Twin towers at 1,064 feet may actually be more suitable. It will add density and not stick out like a sore thumb so much.

Damn, TWO supertalls! This is great!

Personally, I don't think that twin towers are going to stand out in Las Vegas at all. Think about it, twin towers would look like just another condo complex, despite the height, and a single tall building would look just as good, if not stand out more. Also, I want to see if the design will change with the height change, because I hated the 1,888 ft. design.

They'll stand out okay since they'll be at least three hundred feet taller than any other building here, including the Fontainbleau, and they'll be a little taller than the pod at the top of the Stratosphere Tower.

Story in the paper today about the approval. Sounds like they are going to build the towers one at a time instead of simultaineously and it's NOT certain that it will actually be twin towers.

Developers say the first phase could open as early as 2011 with another phase in 2013. It would be just south of the Sahara near the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara Avenue on the former Wet 'n Wild site.

...

The revised proposal the county approved Wednesday is highlighted by one large tower centrally located on the site. The height restriction, more than 800 feet lower than the original proposal, could prompt developers to want more than one tower.

If so, it would make for a much different look.

"It could be crap. They could change everything," said Harvey Gerber, who lives on the 29th floor of nearby Turnberry Place. "They could have buildings in front of your windows."

Gerber was one of three Turnberry residents who spoke before the county board. None opposed the project outright. But they all said they hoped the developers would do their best to minimize the impact on local residents.

To that end, they sought conditions to prevent overnight construction, study traffic on Paradise Road and ensure Turnberry residents access into and out of their approximately 800-unit, multitower community.

Hopefully if they make it two towers they will come back with a much more compelling design. Anyhow, I'm glad to hear that this building will still be a supertall and seems more realistic and likely to get built.
