Sigh. My aunt was convinced she was going to get flooded out of Steveston so I had to go calm her down. Got some pics of the extremely high tide though:

New ONNI development, pumphouse to the left. City crews were standing by, looking for flooding I guess,

Some photos I took of the Terminal ave building fire this morning.
These three were taken from my apartment:

Wow, it was Northwest Produce that had the fire? That's going to affect a lot of other businesses in the city, too.

oddly North-West Produce CLOSED down a few months back..... maybe they moved to the Valley but I doubt it as their phone number is NOT IN SERVICE.

I was wondering what was to happen with the building. good to see its gone now and will be a prime redevelopment site on terminal.

The building has actually been vacant for a while now, since at least last summer. They've had problems in the past with squatters using the loading docks to camp out so they put up plywood hoarding and some mornings there's a security car parked there. But that didn't stop them from getting inside the building as that's likely the cause of this fire. I'm sure this building was going to be gone in the next couple of years anyway. Out back, however, a luxury car dealership was using some of the land for their new car storage. I wonder if any of those cars were affected.

Thanks for the link! On my way home today I noticed they moved all the cars to that street that runs parallel to Terminal. I guess they have no where else to put them. There's still a few cars behind the fence though...

Great photos! I am really trying to think where this photo is taken from. Must be from Cypress Mountain, right?

You got it - from just below the top of the sky chair I believe. The other two are from the snowshoeing trails on Grouse yesterday.

Vancouver from space (Easter, 2013)

Chris Hadfield's amazing stream of photos from the International Space Station continues. Here's tonight's:

Source *rotated by me

This confirms a longstanding suspicion of mine that the streetlights on residential side streets are spaced closer together in the City of Vancouver than in neighbouring municipalities, resulting in a more well lit street network. You can also pick out exactly where industrial land use occurs based on the presence of floodlights with a different colour hue than conventional street lights, with the exception being the container terminals on Burrard Inlet. One of the first things I noticed when I moved to Toronto is that the streetlights are generally white-ish instead of the orange I have grown up with in Vancouver. Interesting to note that UBC shies away from the orange sodium vapour lamps street lights used almost everywhere else.

I was in Poco recently, and noticed that a large section of Shaughnessy has white LED streelights instead of sodium vapour lamps now. I presume use will continue to expand.

Wow Vancouver seems noticeably brighter then Burnaby, you can clearly make out Boundary road. Also the amount of ships waiting to enter the port is very impressive. Great photo.

Never thought of that, but that would explain the same thing I was also wondering about. Such a cool photo!
