PETA attempts to link 2010 Games with seal hunting

Here come all the crazies, trying to grab attention at 2010. Alex Pacheco, co-founder of PETA, was quoted as saying, "Arson, property destruction, burglary and theft are acceptable crimes when used for the animal cause."

The animal rights activists all push their images of clubs and bloody cute baby seals, and that’s all people think about. Not to mention that seals are going far from extinction....

Animal rights group to target 2010 Olympics with seal hunt protest

Written by THE CANADIAN PRESS
Tuesday, 17 February 2009

VANCOUVER, B.C. - An animal rights group wants Canada's Olympic Games to bring an end to what it calls Canada's shame.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says Vancouver's Olympic organizers have the clout to convince the Canadian government to end the controversial seal hunt on the East Coast.

"All eyes are going to be on Canada as it's preparing to host the 2010 Winter Olympics and we think that all that extra attention comes with an increased responsibility to set a positive example for the rest of the world," said Lindsay Rajt, PETA's manager of campaigns.

The group will launch a new campaign on Wednesday featuring the 2010 Inukshuk logo clubbing a seal, with the five Olympic rings dripping blood.

The group is known for its dramatic tactics to highlight animal rights but Rajt said this is the first Olympic-related campaign they've ever launched.

The Olympic organizing committee deferred comment to the federal government, saying it's were responsible for the file.

The committee's response came too late to reach the Fisheries Department in Ottawa.

Canada's seal hunt is the largest of its kind in the world, with an average annual kill of about 300,000 harp seals.

Activists and hunters have faced off for years over the issue.

Opponents decry it as inhumane and economically unnecessary.

Hunters say their methods are better than modern slaughterhouses and cancelling the hunt would decimate the livelihoods of dozens of communities.

I hope the guy with the club will be riot police and the PETA people the seal during 2010 if they start doing what they described as "acceptable crime."

Cool.

Hope I get to go over to partake in the madness.

Vancouver Olympics would be the most successfull ever if it wasn't for all the activists groups making these inanane and stupid connections, and I hope the world see's these idiots for what they really are.

Meh, it would be just like plunking the Olympics in the real San Francisco (and not the Canadian wannabe...).

IMAGINE the crazy crap people would come up with for that! I'd almost want to see that happen for the laugh.

Does PETA know that the seal hunt occurs on the EAST coast and has nothing to do with the people and culture on the West coast? It is only a difference of some 4000 km...

Tomorrow's headline...

"Olympic security budget balloons past $2 billion"

If all of these international looney people show up, you just know there is going to be some disruptions at events.

I foresee naked fat, hairy, hippy women drenched in red paint frolicking on the speedskating ice, mimicking a seal.

It'll blow over....there are protests at every Olympics (except Beijing of course) yet we hardly hear any of their tantrums as the media focuses on the sport and nothing else. They might look into it before the Games, but certainly not during the Games.

And I'd highly doubt they would be able to pull of a stunt like that with the high presence of security....on the other hand, I could see them pulling stunts like the online casino's stunts in Athens and Torino (t-shirt with company logo, jumped into Olympic pool; 2006 closing ceremonies, broke microphone on stage) or the crazed Irish priest that ruined the marathon.

Well, I'm pretty sure parts of our torch relay will look like this (security guards surrounding the torch bearer; police officers surrounding the security guards).

And given our liberal tendencies, there will be opportunities for them to walk all over us during the torch relay. If anyone recalls, the cross-country Olympic Train tour late last year was blockaded by First Nations groups in Ontario for more than an hour. The train couldn't move with those activists standing on the tracks....

Sigh....some oppression would be welcome.

They also missed a glorious opportunity to make the bloodstain more Maple-leaf shaped.

For shame, PETA!

no, no, I'm sure seals at one time sunned themselves on the rocks where the convention center expansion now is...

seriously, though, it's like those nutcases who break into mink farms and release hundreds of them, causing both environmental damage, not to mention the fact that it throws the ecosystem completely out of whack.

while pictures of baby seals being clubbed definitely isn't good PR, I really think there are more serious and pressing issues afflicting our world...

i think that this is the second most shameful moment in the history of PETA. goes right up there with the kid who got killed on Greyhound died and was cannibalized because he ate meat.

and for the Olympics having ANYTHING to do with Seal hunting, some yutz over there should do a little more research.

Why do these people feel entitled to ruin things for everyone? Does anyone ever pay attention to them for good reasons? If PETA wants people to stop eating meat can we eat PETA instead? Good with hummus.

I think that's partially intentional. Implying that clubbing is just for "sport" than it is for "sustenance"

That's what I got out of it.

Personally, I think seals are a good target, because they're cute.

Similar with whales. I remember reading somewhere that it's actually more sustainable to eat whales than it is smaller fish... but I could be mistaken.

It's not that I'm against treating animals ethically... I'm totally for humane treatment... but hey, no one ever sticks up for the cows.
