LAS VEGAS | Project CityCenter | 600 FT / 183 M | 60 FLOORS

Project CityCenter

A $7 Billion Self Contained Urban Metropolis

While not as impressive in terms of sheer height vs other buildings being built, I thought this little $7 Billion 66-acre behemoth being built in Sin City deserved its own thread seeing that it is now under construction

While it does have at it's core a casino and hotel like other Vegas resorts of the past, developer MGM-MIRAGE has taken Vegas to a new level by building what it calls an "urban experience" and a "significant new direction for our city."

World class architects have teamed up to design various portions of the 7 tower project, including:

*A main 4,000 room 60 story resort hotel designed by Cesar Pelli with twin curving glass towers.

2 boutique hotels:

*A Hotel tower run by Mandarin Oriental.

*A "Lifestyle Hotel" tower

*A 50-story ebony condominium-hotel designed by Rafael Vinoly with 1,543

*2 Condominium Towers by Murphy/Jahn

*A 500,000 sq. ft. shopping center

Architect Daniel Libeskind is also working on parts of the project.

The entire project will be rated LEED from the US Green Building Council.

The massive development will create 7,000 construction jobs and 12,000 permanent positions.

It is expected to open in 2009.

CityCenter Main Resort Hotel

Brown Tower is Mandarin Hotel, the two towers on the right are residential towers, directly below those towers is the retail complex.

Looking the bit north of the previous picture, you see the tall "Lifestyle Hotel" tower at the corner as well as the strange jumbled design of the retail complex to the left of it.

A closer look at the CityCenter Resort's actual 3d model.

Mandarin Hotel. The heights of the towers (at least in Vegas terms) can be seen.

Looking behind the CityCenter Resort Towers, and a large circular area with roads and another tower (presumably residential or condo-hotel) is seen, likely designed by Rafael Vinoly.

Directly north of and across the street from citycenter, the $1.8 Billion Cosmopolitan Hotel is already under construction as well. It has 2,000 condominums; 1,000 hotel rooms; a 75,000 sq ft casino; 300,000 sq ft of retail, restaurant and entertainment space; and 150,000 sq ft of meeting/convention space. It opens in 2008.

Excellent project. Las Vegas needs some tall buildings. Any construction photos?

Saw this in the Chicago Tribune:

Jahn joins Las Vegas project

Chicago architect Helmut Jahn on Monday was added to the roster of star architects for a $7 billion mixed-use development in Las Vegas, joining a group that already includes such well-known firms as London's Foster and Partners.

Jahn, architect of the United Airlines Terminal at O'Hare International Airport, will design a pair of residential towers as part of the development, called Project CityCenter. Daniel Libeskind, best known for his master plan of the World Trade Center, will shape retail spaces at the base of the towers, a spokesman for Jahn said.

The CityCenter project, being developed by MGM Mirage Inc., is planned to open in 2009 on a 66-acre site on the Las Vegas Strip.

Here's a news clip weblink which shows the concrete pour for the main hotel towers.

Google Maps Aerial of CityCenter Project Site

To give you an idea of the size of the project, here is a google maps link showing the site, all of that and the parking lot to the left and bottom will become part of the project.

I am trying to figure out the height of the tower behind CityCenter, in the digital rendering I posted above, it looks quite a bit shorter than even the shorter of the twin hotel towers.

Here, this is a shot from the backside of the entire project, the third tower can be seen as a black tower with a lower bluish white tower attached to it. The black tower seems to be as tall as the taller CityCenter hotel tower.
(The grey building between the black tower and the CityCenter hotel towers is the massive Cosmopolitan Hotel building).

Also that big low square structure in front looks to be the mother of all parking garages.

Another view of the Mandaran Hotel tower. Also notice from this closeup view of one of the condo towers in the right, it looks to have an almost checker board looking glass covering it.

BTW, they call it a 7-tower complex, which is technically correct, but they only list 6 towers in all of the news articles. I've come to find that two of the towers, the main hotel tower complex at the back of the site is connected by a podium, which is why all of the descriptions of the site only yield 6 towers. The Rafael Vinoly "Ebony Tower" is jammed up at the northwestern corner of the site.

That is correct. It is news to me however just how tall the podium is however.

The ebony tower is the one I'm trying to find more info on. I wonder why the colors are black and white while most other city center buildings are lighter colored. It's pretty tall too or so it seems.

ok here's a better look at that third tower hidden in the back, it's TALL!! (And black)

The foundation of the main hotel being poured.

Overview of site (it's huge!)

It's really hard to describe how massive this thing will be. So I'll just leave you with a number that will blow your mind:

16,797,000

That's how much square footage this project has.

View from the top of the New York New York parking garage looking at the back of the PCC site. You can see the western wing of the first two floors of the Pelli tower to the right. That pile of rubble in the foreground is all that remains of the Monte Carlo parking garage.

Why don't they have at least one much taller tower on the site? Would provide a nice visual centerpiece and landmark to the complex, both on street and skyline level. If it's called CityCenter, gotta make it look more like it (no one's gonna argue that city centers are usually marked by the city's tallest buildings, at least in the USA).

I'm pretty sure the reason why everything is basically the same 600ft height is because of height restrictions due to the proxmity of the airport.
