The building fits in well with its surroundings...I like it. Is the first of its kind in the nation?

Well, if you mean the museum itself, it's been around for quite some time, just a block north of its new locale, albeit on a much less prominent site.

I really like this design and its exposure. The Bourse is looking lonely...

I think the area stretching from Walnut through Independence Hall to the Constitution Center is really starting to shape up nicely architecturally. Alot of nice slick looking buildings have been going up. I'm excited

I do miss KYW being there on the corner. News trucks continually parked on the corner made that part of the mall seem to always be hoppin'. It was kind of nice having CBS right there in the public eye. Now with the ABC and NBC out on CityLine and CBS in their new home (wherever that is), it just leaves FOX there in Old City.

Of course, the renderings for this museum look great, and it is in the right location.

On another note, directly across the mall from the museum is the Rohm & Haas Corporate HQ building. It is one of my favorite buildings in the city...very mid-century modern Europe with that cat-walk looking framework.

I know it is due for a re-do. Does anyone know when that is supposed to happen?

CBS has its new home on spring garden street. I think its in between 15th or 16th.

Would anyone be willing to periodically snap photos of the construction site as this museum rises and post them within this thread? I used to walk by this site every day when I worked in Society Hill a few years ago, so I feel a bit of an attachment to it haha. Is construction progress appropriate to follow since it's not really anything close to a highrise?

Wow, thank you very much! I'd keep track of it myself if I was consistently in the city... :-( I feel bad asking. I just really like the design.

Does anyone know why its taken so long to build this? It seems like its been a hole in ground since last year...3 years to put it up? Is it something about its location...did the site prep just take a while?

Project was held up after the demolition of the KYW building from permit issues resulting from procedural changes at the Water Department. In addition, it is a highly complicated site condition due to the subway entrances at 5th/Market.

Design of project is quite intricate and requires adequate time for quality construction. The expected opening of the Museum in late 2010 allows for exhibit/gallery work to proceed after construction completion. Not unusual for a museum of this caliber.

Steel work, which starts at the second level above grade, is on schedule to start in October.

Overall, project remains on schedule.

Not the Sexiest news around, but still - From PBJ Today:

Quote:
A foundation started by director Steven Spielberg has donated $1 million to the National Museum of American Jewish History, the museum said Wednesday.

The gift from the Righteous Persons Foundation, which was started with proceeds from Spielberg's "Schindler's List" movie, will go toward the $150 million capital campaign at the NMAJH.

With the gift, the museum has raised $111 million of the $150 million needed to build the 100,000-square-foot museum now under construction at 5th and Market streets in Philadelphia. The figure includes construction costs and an endowment.

The National Museum of American Jewish History, which is located in smaller quarters on North 5th Street, is "dedicated to telling the still unfolding story of Jews in America."

The new museum, which will face out on Independence Mall, is slated to open in 2010.

Major contributors so far include Sidney Kimmel, founder of Jones Apparel Group and namesake of, and contributor to, the Kimmel Center; Ed Snider, chairman of Comcast Spectacor; the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation; Dr. Alexander and Lorraine Dell; and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation.

It should be very soon. It's very hard to see what's going on because the entire perimeter of the work site is fenced off and covered with banner ads for the NMAJH.

Cool project. Does the new building connect to one of those pre-existing buildings in the background in the rendering? Or is this building a stand alone project?
