Yep, I remember that... Also a shame that so many buildings in the complex are sleek yet bland. It's in the middle of the strip in Vegas, the place where I expect to see the most outrageous architecture on this hemisphere!

I'm pretty sure the reason why everything is basically the same 600ft height is because of height restrictions due to the proxmity of the airport.

That's a good point, but why does the airport have to be so damn close to the Strip? I know, it's very pretty to land right among the amazing sights, I've experienced it myself, but this is hazardous, restrictive to buildings and plane maneuvers and the airport occupies an enormous swath of land right on the Strip. Isn't it time they relocated the airport? It's not like Las Vegas lacks the land or anything, that's for sure, nor do I think that it lacks the money, with multibillion dollar projects going up at every corner.

They already are working to build a second airport ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivanpah_Airport ), but they will still need McCarran.

Which current hotels/resorts will be considered obsolete (and ripe for demolition) once this is completed?

Remember these?

Well, the Stardust and the Frontier will go first, in just a couple months actually.

Rumors of demolition keep swirling around the Riviera, Sahara, Circus Circus, Imperial Palace, Bally's, Tropicana, and Excalibur.

i would doubt excalibur is goin anywhere, it has one of the most rooms on the strip and is pretty busy year round. people just want it gone cuz its tacky. (same with circus circus) they would just need a renovation.

ScottG posted this in the Vegas rundown thread:

ABOVE IT ALL
By Norm Clarke/Las Vegas Review Journal

The $7 billion MGM Mirage CityCenter will take the Las Vegas pool party scene to new heights.

At 10 stories up, the swimming pool deck at The Harmon — a 400-room, 240-condominium lifestyle tower — will offer the highest pool party view on the Strip. It will be operated by The Light Group, according to information leaked from Wednesday’s unveiling for senior MGM Mirage management.

Also revealed, the names of the other residential towers:

• A 50-story condominium hotel tower located between Bellagio and the as-yet-unnamed 4,000-room gaming resort at CityCenter will be named VDARA.

• Rising from CityCenter’s retail district will be VEER, twin 37-story glass towers with 358 condominium residences each.

• The 400-room Mandarin Oriental hotel will be topped with 227 condominium residences known as the Residences at Mandarin Oriental.

VDARA?! What kind of name is that? VEER is a pretty lame name as well. At least The Harmon is a decent name, if not very creative.

Is Vdara the building we were calling "Ebony"?

Anyway, Ebony or Vdara are going in this space.

A couple shots of the main hotel looking west.

I think the hole they are digging in front is for some underground parking under the retail area.

Where are the rumors about these coming from?
Demolishing Riviera would be a sad loss. It is one of the casinos that still maintains the classic Vegas grit feel without sacrifising glamour.

Excalibur?! The place is almost brand new, what the hell!

And if Circus Circus goes, Las Vegas may bot even be worth visiting anymore, in my opinion.

my guess is the Monte Carlo. it looks extremely obsolete and out of place next to city center.
