I know I would need an awfully good job offer to consider living in Loudoun, Arlington or Fairfax County, VA (*median* income is well into the six-figures).

But maybe that doesn't concern Amazon.

Lol yes, a bunch of hits from Amazon HQ on a random article about sustainability means they've picked their winner... The first thing I do when I know where my company is relocating me is Google the sustainability laws of that place...

What a joke...

This gave me a good laugh.

Activist Group To Target Cities: Don't Believe Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) HQ2 Promises

The Koch Brothers are the *LAST* ones that should be wagging their finger at someone for gaming the government. Talking about throwing stone and glass houses.

How so? I don’t agree with the Koch Bros’ politics, but they’re very consistently libertarian. I suppose there is a pretty convenient benefit to them of cutting environmental regulations, but their activism involves libertarian causes unrelated to their business too.

There was apparently a leak that Austin and Toronto were the front runners and Amazon had to deny it.

Basically, as I thought my post made perfectly clear, they're hypocrites.

Because we're evil satan worshippers.

Joking aside, Canadians prioritize education and health care over defense. Miraculously there's enough left over to also offer low taxes to spur industry. There's a price to pay for wanting a big military but that's what Americans seem to want.

Perfect timing for this article in the Washington Post that we can safely assume was written by Bezos himself:

Quote:
The Amazon headquarters search mystery has been solved! Or has it?

By Jonathan O'Connell (ghostwriter for Jeff Bezos) February 26 at 8:00 AM

Amazon.com’s search for a site for its second headquarters is now playing out mostly behind closed doors, as officials from 20 finalist locations provide the company with additional materials.

In the vacuum, the tiniest shreds of information related to the HQ2 search are being examined with a level of scrutiny normally reserved for the Zapruder film or Bryce Harper’s coming free agency.

The Amazon search is a serious matter. The chosen city could reap 50,000 jobs and $4 billion in investments from the company. Taxpayers may be asked to foot billions of dollars of subsidies to win the deal. Housing markets and traffic patterns may be significantly affected by the company’s decision. A group backed by the Koch Brothers published a video opposing subsidies for the project. On the other hand, former Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe suggested recently, in an interview, that “whoever wins this thing is going to run for president.”

As anticipation builds, new clues surface seemingly every day about where Amazon is headed, one revelation overtaking the next. So why not indulge? Here’s a sample of guesses.

List and hilarious video trolling these cities (including DC) here:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...=.b4b4a4275d19
Literally Jeff Bezos is just trolling everyone now. He's making them beg, then using his newspaper to make fun of anyone who begs. Rumors about Austin, Northern Virginia, Maryland, LA, and Boston are all named in this article so we can safely assume they will not be selected!

"I know you want it baby" ~ Jeff Bezos

All of NATO actually, which we do contribute to. That said, I've long thought we should have higher defence spending.

I think it has more to do with the fact that we have higher taxes on other things, like sales taxes.

No one pays anywhere close to the full tax rate in the US anyways. Good chance what the majority of companies pay in the US is already decidedly lower than what their Canadian counterparts pay.

Right. Canada looks on the US for defense given their glowing record.

LOL>> Let's not forget, Canada put themselves at risk taking on flying bombs in the form of 11,000 passengers (?) after the US abruptly closed the borders. So far, you owe us.

It was said by a city councilor in Toronto. On that topic, you would be a good fit as one if you ever decide to move north.

No thanks.

Toronto's a great city, but I'm done dealing with the dark and gloomy winters. Plus, I need Waffle House & Chick-Fil-A

Actually, the Congressional Budget Office (among others) have produced a list of 'Effective Corporate Tax Rates' (that is the as-paid rate) among G20 Countries.

Canada's is among the lowest, and still lower than the U.S. at under 10%

https://www.cbo.gov/system/files/115...axratecomp.pdf

Completely inaccurate.

Love your country but let's stick to facts.

Canada, 38th most populous nation in the world.

20th most powerful military.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...Strength_Index

Canada: # of countries who have invaded since 1800: 1

Country who invaded: United States

Country who won: Canada

***

# of Wars the U.S has lost: Vietnam at a minimum and 1812, we could enlarge that list.

# of Wars Canada has lost: zero

We're just fine up here thanks.

oh great, a pedantic excoriation of an offhand comment, which is essentially true. glad that never happens on these boards.
war of 1812, arguable at best.
but more to the point, no one has invaded canada because they know they'd piss us off and we'd go to war over it for our own defense, not because they're afraid of the mighty canadian military.
please.
