And here is the second photo set. All photos are taken on Thursday morning at around 9:30am, so the rush hour has just ended which is why there are so few cars on the road.
They are removing construction time piles from the river bed.
Only one huge piece of the old Port Mann Bridge still remains. It is amazing how it manages to stand by itself.
Those welders have balls of steel hanging up there!
I wonder how they are going to be getting all the equipment down?
South end of the bridge. The speed limit on the western section of the new Highway 1 is only 90km/h (this is BC), although most people are going A LOT faster.
Looking pretty epic.
There are altogether 12 lanes approaching the bridge that merge to 10 lanes (for 2+3+3+2 configuration). There are 6 through lanes and 4 lanes for traffic between Surrey and Tri Cities.
Pedestrian overpass towards Surrey Centre.
Toll to both direction is gathered at the southern end of the bridge with these cameras reading your license plate.
Definitely a big city feeling in this photo!
That's it. Like mentioned, it is a very nice bike ride over the bridge and gives you the chance to admire this impressive bridge much better than when you just swoosh over it by car. It has been quite a project and it's still not complete as dismanting the old bridge is still underway.
The only thing I find the new bridge missing is having any kind of illumination after dark. There is nothing and it is completely dark after the sun goes does, which is a shame. Some colorgul lights would look great IMO.
Oh well, at least it does what it was meant to do and removes a huge bottleneck from Metro Vancouver road system.
/\ A-ma-zing news!!! This will be absolutely awesome. It will be our answer to Toronto's lighting scheme of the CN Tower. Moment Factory's guys are genius, the concept is fantastic.

Some great pictures here. I'm really envious that you're able to ride your bike across such an amazing bridge, as all the bridges here in Shanghai prohibit bikes from crossing.

Thanks! Here is some more Port Mann Bridge at 9am on a hazy Thursday morning.
Wow that is a great shot of a multiplicity of bridges.
Great bridgemanship.

BC gets it right. Sure beats what I had to drove over for 4 years back in the early-mid 90s when I lived in Vancouver.

I know this project is largely at the discretion of American's but, has any one posted a pic of the Gordie Howe Bridge that Detroit is planning on building to Canada?
I'm impressed that they chose a Saskatchewan sports celebrity for naming considering he brought so much pride to the Red Wings for so many years..

The new bridge is not being built by Detroit, nor is it at the discretion of the Americans. I do believe the bridge is being largely (if not entirely) funded by Canada.
