I like that BMO building. It's like a modern interpretation of that Beaux-Artsy style a lot of Canadian banks used in the late 20s/early 30s.

^^ I would love to see a 60 story tower go up there but I think it will be more like 40.

I don't like the fact that this building is being demolished without any guarantees that it won't be replaced with just a parking lot.

The demolition of the little office building at Alberni and Cardero in Vancouver has been watched with great anticipation. Maybe some time next year we will see Kengo Kuma's "Alberni" rising.

I am saddened by the loss of the BMO Building in Edmonton... it had an awesome big city banking hall vibe. Like something you'd see in Manhattan. The replacement is nice but it's too bad it couldn't have gone on another site.

Yikes, Vancouver's losing a pretty sizable office building there....sucks that there's no replacement office space

Even though the Alberni tower looks good, it shouldn't be in the place of office space in Vancouver.

I like the BMO building in Edmonton as well, but it's just what happens in a city with a lot of growth.

Seems to me the existing building could be a great podium. Jasper Avenue has been stripped of way too much character in the past 30-40 years.

BMO itself replaced a character building, the Tegler. We've come fully circle on that lot.

Nothing has been revealed on the replacement.

Wasn't it slated to become a mixed use tower by Regent Developments? Or am I thinking of a tower by that developer that's planned for Jasper Avenue?

It's even worse if there is nothing planned for the site.

I think the city of Edmonton is shooting themselves in the foot for not getting any guarantees that a building will replace it. Gambling with a developer is something I would never do.

^ The developer said they plan to build a mixed use skyscraper around 40 storeys tall.

The city told the developer to demolish the building now while they can, or wait until 102 Ave. LRT construction is finished to do so. I guess the developer didn't want to wait and see if they could find a tenant for the existing building. I can understand that given the odd layout of the building and the fact that it has no dedicated parking garage. It's a shame because the building itself would have been a great fit for a flagship department store. On the plus side, there are fewer reasons for the parkade on Rice Howard Way to exist!

What's going on with that building in the back? It kind of looks like a jail. The addition on top looks awkward at this point.

It's the Telus Toll building. It's an office tower. From what sources say, it's a brutalist tower built in '70.

^ Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I was always under the impression that the Telus Toll Building was mostly full of telecom equipment and not actual offices... basically the Edmonton version of this thing (which has been made over since this photo was taken):

I don't mind the Telus Toll Building for what it is (a 70s phone infrastructure box) but that mechanical addition at the top, with its blue camo paint, is hideous.

I kind of like it for what it's worth but ya what is up with that thing on top? Also that Verizon reclad is one of the best I've seen done on a skyscraper.

I'm still bitter over that one. We're losing some truly rare 1950's quasi-deco towers, along with an elegant 50m tall 1930's art deco building.
