I hope this isn't one new structure, but the permit to tear down and rebuilt the entire second half of the old Guste Projects. HANO's plans were put on hold after Katrina for this project. Around the time of Katrina half of the 3-block-long apartment units were torn down and redeveloped into mixed income individual units, and the streetgrid was reinstated in a few blocks. Ideally, this permit is the final phase to it, and not a whole new other housing project.

In the bio-district's blueprint, that tall 10-story very dated building for seniors is completely gone. Maybe that's an accurate sneak-peak for the future of this site. With the new high-rise for seniors going adjacent to the old Texaco building on Canal as part of the Iberville revitalization, perhaps the need for this dilapidated old building isn't there anymore.

Also, I saw concrete being poured into the foundation for the University Medical Complex. Looks like the complete slab will be in the next week or two.

Also, finally NOLA has standardized the sidewalk materials for the DDD!!!

Illness

Latoya mentions that they need the health clinic (which I'm all for..that's great) because 68% of the surrounding 4 neighborhoods suffer from chronic illness... WTF!?!?!?

That's impossible...

Hypertension and diabetes wouldn't be too far of a stretch, especially hypertension.

The FMIA wants out of the proposed hospitality district because Vialou thinks it'll turn Frenchmen into Bourbon...

Dear god, is there anything that these NIMBYs don't hate? He's already screamed at my face so close that I could feel the spit hitting my nose about something or another....just saying.

Anyway, I like this concept A LOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "Ski lodge meets hooters"

http://neworleanscitybusiness.com/th...-orleans-area/

5 locations in GNO in 5 years? Seems ambitious when Hooter's only has 2? At least one..is there one on the WANK? I miss the French Quarter one...that's prime location.

I say we have a forum happy hour at the first one that opens.

And yes...this is a development related picture because the forum needs to see the inside of the restaurant and it's character (baton rouge location courtesy of their website):

Hopefully not anytime soon. I like that building and I don't see why we need to eradicate every trace of the 1960s. Have you looked at it recently? It has a fresh coat of paint and it looks great. The zig-zag apartments did indeed cut off the streetgrid for 3 blocks, but so does the expressway. It's not like the neighborhood will magically be re-connected once the apartments are gone.

They actually just sank $30 million into the high rise for renovations:

I go to LSU (graduating in this may!) and I've seen the Twin Peaks in Baton Rouge. Judging by the cheesy suburban design I would imagine these locations would only be in places like Metairie or Slidell. The building design is basically made to look like a wooden ski-lodge and would stick out like a sore thumb in New Orleans. Suffice to say, I'm not a big fan of chain restaurants in the suburbs...

I also don't get why the local media keeps referring to the "breast-raunt" craze considering the only other time they talked about it was when Happy's (also in BR) was being built downtown. In BR, Happy's is just seen as a bar.

Reminds me of Tilted Kilt, which is [vaguely Scots-Irish] pub-themed instead of ski lodge-themed. Several conservative Chicago suburbs got their panties in a bunch when Tilted Kilt tried to open in their communities (I think they all ended up getting approved, though.)

Because good things come in pairs, I second the suggestion for a Twin Peaks meetup...

Oretha Castle Haley Blvd.

$100,000,000 of investment around OC Haley taking place. The City will also reduce it from 4 lanes to 2!!
http://www.abc26.com/news/newswithat...0,215015.story

Hopefully when (if) the South Market District gets built, it will provide a seamless transition, better tying that neighborhood to the CBD, while benefiting both.

Wow, the road diet is an unexpected piece. The $1 million figure is really too low for a sidewalk expansion or a neutral ground, so I'm guessing they'll accomplish the narrowing with diagonal parking, which is crappy for cyclists (cars backing up cannot see approaching traffic).

On the positive side, a good deal of street parking will discourage landowners from providing their own parking, assuming the city allows it.

Can I say that it's a bit shameful when private industry is willing to spend $100 million in the corridor while the city can only chip in a measly $1M for pavement patching and some paint?

Drury Update

The crane/drill has been moving around quite a bit on the property so I guess they're drilling these things pretty quickly.

I didn't get a shot of all the rebar...oh well, but it's been a steady flow of concrete trucks coming in and dumptrucks taking out dirt.

OC Haley

Umm most of that $100 million is public money too. The NORA building with elderly housing and the home renovations are both done with Federal funds.

Mid City Market

Mid City Market on Carrollton is moving along pretty quickly. All the pilings for Winn Dixie are in place. The existing hardware etc building is totally gutted and all the soil is in place for the front buildings as well. At this pace they will be able to open by the projected early 2013 date.

West Bank awaits development following bridge expansion

CityBusiness has an article, "West Bank awaits development following bridge expansion."

Some of the biggest open pieces of land in Jefferson are over there, it'll be interesting to see what ends up being built.

Developer targets ‘working professionals’ with Central City condos
by Maria Clark, New Media Specialist
April 30th, 2012 · Blog

Developers say the construction of a new condominium building in Central City may attract a wider range of homebuyers as redevelopment efforts continue in the neighborhood.

Qualifying buyers for one of 10 condos in the building at the corner of Saratoga and Thalia streets must earn less than 120 percent of the area’s median income. The incentive casts a wider net to attract working professionals who wouldn’t necessarily meet low-income qualifications, said Robert Taylor, president of Thoron Development, which is overseeing the project.

Thoron Development broke ground last week on the property, which the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority previously owned. NORA remains an investor in the $2.7 million project, which is funded through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program.
Slick modern design. I know some of the guys on the design team, seems like they did a good job. They call this a multi-family development, but really it looks like it's just 4 doubles and two singles that share a courtyard/alley.
