Hi,

I am looking for a photo of Eaton's Polo Park that must have these qualities:
  1. Taken At Night with the Eaton's sign lit up
  2. High Quaiity Good to Print at least 8" x 10"
  3. In Living Colour

I want a copy of this photo, measuring at least 8" x 10" to hang on my bedroom wall.

I have already been to:
  1. Manitoba Archives
  2. Millennium Library

Both have said that they don't have such an item in their collection.

I have other places I might look though:
  1. Management Office of Polo Park
  2. the St. James Historical Society
  3. Russ Gourluck (author of the book 'A Store Like No Other')
  4. The University of Manitoba Library Archives

Anyone here be able to help me find what I'm loo
king for?

In Gourluck's book, on page 150 is a B&W daytime photo of Eaton's Polo Park. The credits page says:

Polo Park Shopping Centre exterior before opening. Winnipeg, May (2nd), 1968. (EA Archives of Ontario F 229-308-0-207, AO 6606).

Off the top of my head have you tried the Free Press Photo Archives? I am not sure where the Tribune Archives ended up.

They're unlikely to be in colour. The Tribune archives are at the University of Manitoba.

The most likely bet would have been Cadillac Fairview or whoever originally developed the mall, but that would be a very long shot. Or maybe the Henry Kalen estate (wherever that is now) would have something like that ... he photographed just about everything. Otherwise I can't think of any prospects, especially for a night shot.

The Simpsons-Sears sign was what you saw when you drove by on Portage. I remember that very well. Not so much Eaton's.

The U of M has a Henry Kalen collection available online... I scrolled through it but couldn't find a photo that meets LilZebra's specs. (There are some real gems in there though, it's easy to fall down the rabbit hole so consider yourselves warned!)

You can find it here:

http://imgserver.lib.umanitoba.ca:81...ITOBALCM~74~74

It's not a very big collection... I'm guessing it's barely the tip of the iceberg of Kalen's body of work.

Wolseley Map

Hi all, looking for a map of the Wolseley area around 1909. Preferably something like this, or at least nice enough to make a big print of. Anyone have something?

According to 'OB, the City of Winnipeg has to look for a new Archives building after major storm damage to the old Carnegie Library on William a few years ago. The Archives is currently operating out of a temporary site in a West End warehouse, and apparently fixing up the William Avenue building would cost $9 million:

http://www.cjob.com/2016/12/05/city-...-be-relocated/

It's too bad, because the Carnegie Library was well located (near City Hall) and the Archives were a good use for a heritage building. I hope it doesn't end up staying in that warehouse where it is now.

I wonder what will happen to the library? I'm guessing that renovating a building to archival standards can cost a pretty penny, but perhaps renovating it for general office or educational use might cost less?

Today's WFP has an interesting look at the history of Winnipeg's long-gone "comfort stations"

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/loc...405833286.html

I'm too young to know what they looked like on the inside, but the exteriors were certainly appealing...

The only one I remember is the one at Osborne and Broadway. But that one was demolished fairly recently.

I wonder if they were all "fully" demolished, or if some of them were just capped off and still exist under the streets?

It's the Aberdeen Hotel. Did they knock it down for the ballet building? I can't really remember. It wasn't something you really wanted to contemplate much, at least in its later years.

IIRC it was in the middle of that strip of Carlton. I don't think it was on the corner of Graham. The building was demolished in 1995. Doesn't seem that long ago but I only have vague recollections of it. Now that I've seen a picture of it I remember that distinct roof on the tower portion.

1995? Really? I do not recall it at all. I was thinking 80s.

Early/mid 90s sounds about right to me. It was demoed to make way for the RWB student residences as I recall.

There was some housing around there too. Almost the last of it in downtown Winnipeg.

It's difficult to find any historical information on the Aberdeen Hotel.
