This award-winning film by Marcel Meili and Christoph Schaub tells the story of 'Il Girasole', the rotating modernist house built into the Po Valley hillside in northern Italy. Affectionately termed 'The Sunflower', the house was built in the 1930s by architects Angelo Invernizzi and Ettore Fagiuoli, with the help of their artist, sculptor, designer and architect friends.

Patkau Architects - Linear House in Salt Spring Island, British Columbia
Monday, 09 May 2011 13:07

Linear House is located on a sixteen acre farm on Salt Spring Island, an island in the Strait of Georgia between Vancouver Island and the mainland of British Columbia, Canada. The property is bisected from east to west by a long row of mature Douglas fir trees. There is a gentle slope falling across the site from south to north. The south half of the site is an orchard containing a variety of fruit trees; the north half of the property is a hay field. There was an existing cottage on the property which has been sold and relocated to a neighbouring property. The existing barn, garage and studio buildings remain.

ruins --> modern house

Quote:
The massive stone walls of the original home were doomed to failure as they were set on top of a sandy foundation and further eroded by treasure hunters searching for buried gold. A century later the home was abandoned to the whims of the coast until a couple decided that it would be the perfect backbone for a new house.

The first job was to firm up the home’s stone walls and foundation. The new home huddles within the confines of the immense walls and branches out with a glass-lined living room at the home’s core. The other wing is buffeted by a large dry stacked stone wall. Lighter materials such as wooden beams and steel provide basic building elements while reducing the energy needed to ship materials to the site.

Recycled 747 ‘Wing House’ Has Finally Landed in the Desert

Remember the beginnings remarkable rural rebuild from last year? It may be rather hard to forget: 4.5 million plane parts (or: 400,000 pounds of airplane) were transported by truck and helicopter, then turned into a unique desert dwelling – a feat finally completed last month.

That is kick ass, I love how its totally different from the surrounding 19th century street scape but yet somehow blends in.

mill --> house

Quote:
Designed by Barcelona-based Minim Interior Design Studio, the residence located in Spain’s Priorat Wine Region showcases a rustic atmosphere accentuated by the balanced use of modern furnishings. The building used to be an old mill, but the architects transformed it into an interesting residence while respecting the original space. Trying to overcome the building’s shortcomings, the architects included “a bold “sculpture-staircase” in order to organize the building internally.”

Casa Torcida by SPG Architects

Posted by Dave on July 6th, 2011

SPG Architects designed the Casa Torcida in Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica.

Description from the architects:
SPG Architects transformed an abandoned steel frame and concrete slab structure into a five-level, 18000 SF, indoor-outdoor residence on a rain-forested mountainside overlooking the Golfo Dulce. The house is environmentally sensitive, technologically advanced, and modernist by design. A flexible building perimeter provides a seamless flow from inside to out that completely blends the built environment with the natural setting and the spectacular views. The house is energy self-sufficient – appliances and lighting were chosen for low power consumption that is sourced by photovoltaic cells on the roof. Solar hot water panels provide domestic hot water. Maximizing cross ventilation and ample overhangs have eliminated the need for air conditioning in this year-round tropical climate. As a result, this house is an indigenous yet distinctly modern piece of architecture.
