Gateway area is not that far from Montavilla

I completely agree with both of you. The thing makes a mockery of its rather beautiful neighbor, and of the Alphabet Historic District in general. I can't decide which is worse: this, or the Restoration Hardware.

I'm totally fascinated by this, for two reasons.
  1. It's a brick building. A quick google suggests that it is possible to move masonry buildings, but surely that can't be easy (or cheap)?
  2. Can Portland's worst architect really get a design past the Historic Landmarks Commission?

I know that MW8 flustercuck is pretty horrendous, but worse than Fosler or LRS? Is that possible?

For Portland, 'oops' equals $125,000 payment to developer

"Oops" is typically spelled with just two o's.

But for the city of Portland on Wednesday, oops came with a dollar sign and three zeros.

The City Council voted 4-0 to approve a $125,000 settlement with developer Marty Kehoe because city officials incorrectly read Portland's zoning code and associated height restrictions.

City planners in early 2014 told Kehoe an apartment project at Northwest 19th Avenue and Overton Street could be built up to 75 feet, according to a legal complaint filed by Kehoe's Portland Leeds Living, LLC.

But in August 2014, the city reversed course and said the project could only rise 55 feet unless the developer pursued a more complicated and costly design-review process.
...continues at the Oregonian.

I was jogging through the Pearl and NW this morning when I noticed the site is being cleared at 19th & Overton for this GBD-designed apartment building. It's a small victory, but a nice one for those who care about good design.

I stopped at the NW New Seasons, also, which is much, much better than any of the others I've frequented. The 21Q project is well underway, along with other projects like the Tess O'Brien apartments. I was really struck by how big a boom this is. Along with the better-known Pearl projects, these smaller projects will have a huge impact on Portland once completed. As with the hotel boom, all bubbles will eventually pop, but it's gratifying to see how much will remain once the current one is over.

19th & Overton is beautiful. I really look forward to it going up. I also agree with you about New Seasons - it's a huge leap in design quality for them.

Same here, though I still feel sorry for that little house sitting next to it.
