That North "wing" looks like a parasitic twin. Have we ever determined whether it got amputated or is still attached to the project?

The one thing im concerned about is that huge flat roof of the podium spreading out from the tower. There are going to be a lot of rooms looking over that. I think they should make that a green roof with grass, bushes and a few small trees, so it will be more visually appealing.

That is a great idea for that roof. A green roof would look great there.

And perhaps one of the nicest JW's. This building is a game changer for Austin on so many levels.

I third that opinion! A green roof would be an amazing change to what is shown on the model. They don't even have to go all out with it. Perhaps they will realize the "error" and make some last-minute design changes.

And I totally agree that this is a game changer. I absolutely remember the sick feeling I had when I originally saw the design for the building, pre-JW. It made my stomach turn and I was actually angry about this completely wasted opportunity. And being a new building, it would be an eyesore for downtown's skyline for decades.

I'm not an Austinite, but I'm so proud of how this has turned out. It more than makes up for some of the other upcoming building projects that aren't quite what we'd like, in my opinion.

I would like to see them turn that blank roof into a greenspace/amphitheatre area where groups could perform concerts. Could even make it an outdoor bar/cafe with live music at night amongst green space on the roof.

It does seem like a wasted opportunity/space. Leaving that large of a roof blank on a hotel like that isn't much better than the parking lot it replaced. Think of the views!

I say they should put a Zoo on that thing. Then it will be all green like a man-made forest or something on a Hotel. That would be epic. Why am I not an architect dammit! I'd be awesome.

The lot is all fenced off now but no dirt is being moved yet.

There is some work going on with 2nd Street.

So, since I'm not there to witness it, is the entire east part of 2nd st railed off or under construction? I gather they were going to work on 2nd St right after SXSW. If so, I can't imagine seeing all the construction going on, with the Hyatt, the apartments, and now the Marriott coming underway. Must be crazy!

The construction that will start soon on this building will actually be for the underground parking. That'll take about 10 months according to one of the articles on the building. Once they're at street level with the garage, then the building will start to rise. Once they get the underground parking garage and podium completed, the tower will rise fairly quick since it's actually pretty skinny.

Cool. It looks like they're getting some site prep work going.

You should post these photos in the main section thread, too. Here's the link:

It looks like there will be 3 tower cranes at the JW Marriott site on Congress:

Here is the permit case number: 2012-075367 RW

Type it into the permit number field.
https://www.austintexas.gov/devrevie...s.jsp?myWhere=

This was posted July 25.

Quote:
A request has been received for issuance of a license agreement to allow the installation of 3 tower cranes adjacent to 110 E. 2nd Street (*) Street Project Name: JW Marriott
