OMG what we've lost with the glassy redesign of this one.
(see NYGuy's post #13) . . .
The previous design was Really Really Great urbanism -
Sharp slender dark well-proportioned architecture - contrasting with the shiny
bloated glass forms of HY and MW. It would have been the perfect foil.
But they had to make much more money - so they give us even more
of the same old cheap sh*t.
- that cheaper glass that city-folk get to see with just about EVERY new building . . .
Makes Manhattan West just another sterile dead-lookin' project . . .
like the newly mauled WTC.

Have you ever seen this building in person? It was covered in rust and lime stains, was impossible to clean, and sucked the air from the street like a hulking toadstool. I'm normally a big fan of brutalist architecture but I'm glad to see this relic get a face lift.

I agree. The newly-clad building looks about 417 quintillion times better than the old eyesore version. And I say that as someone who has fond memories of the pre-renovation building, having played ice hockey many times in SkyRink (which formerly occupied the top floors of 450 W 33rd).

This new version will fit in nicely and will become a great commercial space for media and tech companies.

RobEss and McSky -
I'm talking about 3 Manhattan West . .
I think you're talking about 5 Manhattan West . .
and I agree with you on that.

Brookfield pays $69M for space in Vectra’s Manhattan West holdout building
Developer has been constructing megaproject around the sole property it doesn't own

July 20, 2015
Tess Hofmann

Quote:
Brookfield Property Partners may be one step away from claiming the only remaining parcel surrounded by Manhattan West, its $4.5 billion megaproject on the far West Side.

The developer, based in New York and Toronto, paid $69 million to acquire Planned Parenthood’s 72,500-square-foot space at Vectra Management Group-owned 424 West 33rd Street, according to property records filed with the city Monday. Vectra still holds the title to the remaining 68,300 square feet in the 13-story building, and it’s unclear whether a deal had been struck for Brookfield to acquire that portion.

Brookfield has been constructing its U-shaped project entirely around Vectra’s property.

Vectra’s Raju Shah told Real Estate Weekly in August that “Brookfield hasn’t made an offer that we found acceptable.” A representative from Brookfield confirmed the purchase of the Planned Parenthood condo but declined to comment further. Representatives from Planned Parenthood and Vectra did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Brookfield’s Manhattan West development will contain three mixed-use towers, low-rise retail buildings, a public plaza and a hotel. Signed tenants include law firm Skadden, Arps and financial data firm Markit.

Kind of a blasé façade on the residential tower, if you ask me. Not terrible, but nothing to write home about. Of course this will be filler, with the real fun coming with 1 and 2 Manhattan West.

3MW is not homey residential in a cozy hood . .
We get this cold heartlessness compared to . .
one of Brookfield Properties' initial higher ambitions . .
see NYguy's Jan 15-2015 post . .
Who were the architects for that beauty ? . .
I guess folks settle for & pay luxury prices for . .
such alienating pragmatism . .
