Crane went up on Thursday. I have no photos, but as expected, it is reasonably tall.

Here are some pics I took a couple days ago! This thing is starting to come along, it is going to complete this area of New West very nicely.

All pics are my own: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30634635@N03/

so why couldn't plaza 88 do underground parking like this project, which is downhill from it?

This. I was under the impression that Plaza 88 required that monster of a multi-story parkade because the soil wasn't good enough, but that is a pretty serious pit!

WRT soils, could be that there's a rock drop-off just to the south of the civic centre site. I think the escarpment starts around the Interurban Building. Do the condo towers along the Quay have underground or above-ground garages?

Update on the civic centre - slated to open in Spring 2014:

Quote:
Dan Giordano, project manager with Pivotal Project Management, said all of the cement for P3 has been poured and P2 is about 50 per cent complete. He said the goal is to be at grade by November, at which time people will see the civic centre and office tower begin to take shape.

As far as I know all the condos along the Quay have above grade parking garages.

The project has been named "Anvil Centre".

I thought it was being called Merchant Square?

http://www.merchantsquare.ca/

Or is Merchant Square just the office tower, and the Anvil Centre just the civic centre podium?

Going by the last paragraph of the article, I think you could be right that there will be separate names for each part of the complex

Quote:
The Anvil Centre will house a 350-seat theatre, conference and meeting facilities, arts studios, the city museum and the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame museum, and a tourist information centre. The city is also building an eight-storey office complex on the property.

There's already a condo called "The Anvil" over by Sapperton Station.

We have the building height from the stacking plan: 186ft (56.7m) and a floor count of 13 (9 for office and 4 for the podium). The "Ground" elevation is presumably from Columbia St.

Excellent! Well that is a pretty decent height! Basically 57 meters The diagram I did was only 40 meters, and the building data page lists only 11 floors.

Is it above ground yet?

Yeah it's above ground level now. Just drove past it the other day and it looks to be on the second level. The angled podium is starting to take shape.

Can someone actually post a photo of the progress of this building?

That 980 Howe St office building project in Vancouver, which is now visually confirmed as *DEAD* is making me sad. I would really appreciate to see some hope in the suburbs at the very least that some office buildings are still getting built...

There are "some" being built downtown:
745 Thurlow, Telus Garden, MNP Tower, top of Nordstrom & Rogers Arena

But those are projects that were started quite a while ago. And I can see Telus out my residential window, the MNP Tower outside my office window, Nordstrom when I walk to and from work, and Rogers when I am driving to and from the burbs.

But this New West building I see nothing. Is it too much to ask for a little visual update??? I need something to cheer me up after seeing that depressing photo in 980 Howe, another site that I frequent if I need to go to the movies...
