Apparently the gap in the Portmann bridge was oficially completed today. Here's a great shot from the Van local:

This bridge obviously isn't as spectacular as most of the others posted here but it is cool nonetheless. Recently constructed, it is the longest wooden bridge in Quebec and is very ecofriendly, so to speak: built in Quebec, engineered by a Quebec company using wood from the Province. It was built on a land owned by the Faculty of Forestry of Laval University.

Happy 111th anniversary of the world's longest covered bridge!

Loving the Google homage to this wonderous occasion:

It really is great that our neighbours to the south celebrate this day so much in tribute of us and our historic bridges. Brings a tear to my eye.

Unfortunately that google doodle only shows up when you access google from Canada, so the Americans are still busy celebrating the 4th of July or some silly day like that.

They aren't all bad though, this was the ESB on Canada Day:

Another old bridge which I don't think has been mentioned is the original reversing falls suspension bridge in Saint John, built in 1853. It might have been the oldest suspension bridge in Canada:

http://new-brunswick.net/Saint_John/vintage.html

Today there are two spans in that location: a railway bridge from 1885 and another bridge built in the early 20th century.

Another interesting historical bridge anecdote is that the Macdonald Bridge in Halifax, the older of the two current harbour bridges, was actually the third bridge to cross the harbour. The first two were railway bridges built in the 19th century that were destroyed by hurricanes.

Not to derail this thread but the Empire State Building illumination is really cool.

I've been looking around this thread, and I'm impressed. Canada have a lot of bridge construction going on, especially in great waterways like the one in Quebec.

That Sault Ste. Marie bridge really reminds me of the Burlington Skyway. Just the look of it coupled with the lift bridge right beside it.

the macdonald bridge in halifax is a work of art, while the mackay bridge is emblematic of decline.

i prefer the cartier to canada's other bridges; it doesn't hurt that all of the layers of a 400-year-old metropole are visible from its span.

^ That snowmobile bridge reminds me of the suspension footbridge at Scenic Caves in Collingwood:

Longest suspension footbridge in Ontario (126m), 25m above the valley and stream below it, and 300m above Georgian Bay.
