He had a bit of time to spare from work today, so we spent that time walking down the pier... Made it to the WFC for some pictures too! No penthouse tour for me, unfortunately

He pointed out the fact you can see the top of 1 WTC from right next to the High Line - the hotel I am staying at is literally 2 blocks south of where the High Line begins. I couldn't believe I never noticed that (my 2nd time staying at that particular hotel!). Talk about feeling silly/oblivious!

I agree - he rocks

if we could only implode the Verizon building , the second one down would be a fantastic shot with FDR drive and the East River in the foreground and a great view of the skyline behind it. nice set Hunser, thanks for posting

Normally, yes. But this building is different... I just hope they can get an enclosed spire. 1776 would beat everything in China, at least for now. That would be a symbolic victory in itself.

Is this spire thing official? I've seen no one say that this change from a spire to an antenna is "official". Seems like alot of conjecture. If you note in the vid with Obama the banner or rendering of the building STILL SHOWS the enclosed randome. Look at the banner. They even made no effort to hide it and made it stand out in a SOLID BLUE "O" in the very beginning of the banner. And so, they are just now figuring out YEARS after the initial design conception that this thing is not feasible? Some one tell me what the hell is going on? The antenna without the randome looks ridiculous. You are telling me they are gonna spend billions to build this and put that crap on top? Why is the entire country not outraged? Am I that much of a skyscraper geek? LOL

So as 1 and 4 wtc get ready to top off, I take it things are still the same on 2 and 3 wtc? Or I guess I should say 3 wtc, since their looking for someone to sign space there. The only good thing about the wait is we can enjoy these two towers completed and then we can start the process again of watching those two go up.

Yes, it’s extremely official and has been addressed via numerous channels by the Durst Organization. Absolutely no conjecture, not sure why you are thinking that. The renders, logo, etc. are old and simply have not been updated. The logo is especially ironic (to abuse the word) but is a prime example of the left hand not knowing what the right is doing.

The issue with the maintenance costs / feasibility etc. is Durst’s purported reason to scrap the radome enclosure, but Durst also has a strong incentive to cut costs as it essentially means they are paid more. SOM claims that they have offered to redesign the enclosure but that Durst isn’t interested. Durst claims that they offered SOM a redesign a long time ago but that SOM wouldn’t negotiate at that time. Whom you believe / what you believe is the true situation is fairly moot, because chances are slim to none that any other plan would be implemented at this point.

It’s really a shame. After the primary geometry, if they could pick one single thing to severely damage this tower’s uniqueness and aesthetic, it would be to remove the white radome spire design. I was greatly looking forward to the beauty of that element. Now every single time I see that huge bare antenna looming over downtown I’m going to be unwillingly reminded of what could have been.
