Correction "Chicago's Sears Tower"

===================

Chicago’s Willis Tower reveals plan for ambitious $500M makeover

Quote:
Beyond reinforcing the Willis Tower as a civic destination, its owners aim to make the 43-year-old building the ultimate place to work. Roughly 460,000 square feet of existing space within the building will be reconfigured with much set aside exclusively for use by the building’s commercial tenants. Planned amenity additions include multiple lounges, meeting and events spaces, and a newly opened 33rd floor fitness center.

The tower’s observation deck is also set to receive a major overhaul. The 103rd-floor observatory will be expanded—possibly to a second level—and see the creation of a new thrill attraction designed to give visitors a new perspective of what it’s like to be 1,353 feet above street level. The upcoming feature would supplement the tower’s current “ledge” attraction which allows guests to venture beyond the observatory’s windows by stepping inside a set of transparent glass boxes. In addition, the renovation work will also add a new underground access point for the Skydeck.

$500 Million Revamp Proposed for Chicago's Iconic Willis Tower
Quote:
Long a symbol of the city since its opening in 1973, Chicago's iconic Willis Tower, commonly known as the Sears Tower, is set to receive a massive, $500 million revamp in order to boost the tower's public profile. The extensive list of renovations will include the addition of new retail and dining spaces, as well as an exciting new rooftop deck and public outdoor space, which would be spread across the tower's lower and immediate above-ground levels. Involving a total of six completely re-imagined floors of retail, dining, and entertainment options, all of which would be open to the public and fully accessible, the ambitious revitalization project will completely transform the Willis Tower, bringing some much-needed vibrancy to the otherwise austere 108-storey office building.

That stairway looks atrocious on this building.

I agree, that staircase looks tacky and screams of owners desperate for attention, more so than letting the views be the attraction. And with that CN Tower Edge Walk clone it seems like the top of the Willis Tower is being turned into a Vegas-esque gimmick.

Perhaps they can also open up the rooftop, weather permitting.

On the Sears Tower roof? Oh hell no. You couldn't pay me to walk around up there. Chicago is bad enough at street level but can only imagine the drafts way up there. In February.

Isn't it already? Do you live in/are you from Chicago? If so, how many times have you went to the top and what was/were the occasion(s)?

As you can see from the information alongside my details, I live in Toronto. Hence the reference to the CN Tower. I've been to Chicago a number of times, but only went up the Sears Tower (it was called that when I went up) once. At that time, it was the height and views which appeased me. I haven't been up since the glass boxes were added, so can't comment on them. However, I've lost count how many times I've walked on the glass floor up the CN Tower. So I can appreciate the attraction that offers.

As for these proposed extra gimmicks and attractions, in my opinion they distract and are an unwelcome addition to the Willis Tower.

I grew up in Chicago and lived there- with the exception of a few months here and there in my college years- until I was 22. I went to the top of Sears once, ever. It's already a gimmick and a tourist trap. I don't see an issue with doubling down on that.

Anybody know what the scoop is with Sears’s antenna lights? They were recently turned back on after what seems like a couple months of being out, and they’ve been lit in some pretty cool multicolor schemes recently. Curbed Chicago claims they switched over to an LED system similar to the Empire State Building, which would make sense given the recent lighting schemes, but I have yet to see anything else about it online. Just wanted to see if anyone else has heard anything.

Here are some photos that I took of the Willis Tower about a year ago when I went to Chicago. The Willis Tower was by far the best thing of the entire trip
