Houston Has Heart

I havent made a photo thread in probably 5 months, been ridiculously busy. But I moved to downtown Houston about 4 months ago and been very busy also taking photos of the city. Heres some Ive taken in the past 4 months.

City Hall

Rice University

The Medical Centre

One of the last remaining original brick streets in old Freedmans Town

First house built in what would become Montrose in 1911 I believe

Houston Heights Neighborhood

Transco Tower in the Galleria area

Main St.

Downtown from the Old 6th Ward

Part of the Medical Center with the original building of the Medical Center hidden behind one of the ugly new additions.

Looking towards downtown from the Medical Center, Rice is one the left side of the photo.

Temple in Bellaire

Montrose

Montrose

One of the few old Catholic churches in Houston, downtown.

I spy with my little eye a Diskojoe

The best god damned tacos in the universe at Chipoltepec Tacos.

Montrose

View from my apartment of downtown and out towards the Galleria in the distance.

Ghetto 3rd Ward

3rd Ward

45

Courthouses and whatnot on the north side of downtown.

Bank of America Tower looking down at the old 6th ward

Interior of the Gulf Building

5th Ward

5th ward

Bungalow about to be restored in the Heights

5th ward

Art car parade

The Heights

Caninos in the Greater Heights

5th Ward

5th Ward

New houses in The Heights

3rd Ward

3rd Ward, which is just a deplorable sight.

5th Ward

CoCos in Midtown; it has the best crepes ever.

3rd Ward

Galleria Area and River Oaks

Old Methodist Church downtown

Great photo set. Especially like the Rice University area aerial pic. Do you have any of the West University area (probably one of the top desirable neighborhoods in the country). I'm a bit biased since members of my family are in West U, but it is an incredible place.

I really dont have any photos of that hood. I ride my bike through it all the time and its a gorgeous neighborhood, but I find it hard to take decent photos in it for some reason.

But, WTF with the random horses in the abandoned Third Ward shot? lol So confused.

Beautiful thread and pictures, photoLith! Thanks for sharing.

I like very much your long exposure shots, they´re really sharp and colorful. Aerial views are great too.

Houston seems to be a very nice city. I like its buildings and skyscrapers. I´d like to visit.

Congratulations and greetings from Madrid, Spain!

Houston is really starting to intrigue me. Photo threads like this sure do help. The city has a soul, and it comes through in these pictures.

Nice stuff. I would love to see your take on some of the brick homes in Third Ward's Riverside Terrace neighborhood. I would also like to say I miss seeing Houston in the spring/summer when the city is so lush and green. During the holidays is not the best time to bask in that. Again, great stuff!

P.S. The addition at Memorial Hermann is offensive how they managed to hide the original structure.

great pics again, especially the night ones. did you have to get permission for the interior shots?

3rd Ward looks bad; storm damaged Mississippi and Iraqi slum bad. are those horses or donkeys in that one shot? i wanted to photograph the area but never got around to it.

No city has grown on me more over the years than Houston, and it's thanks to Forum photo sets like these that my opinion of the place has gone up so much. Houston really does have soul, and no matter how much I want to dislike Texas and its cities, when it comes to Houston I cannot help myself - there's just something about that is intriguing.

Keep the Houston pics coming guys!

All I can say is that I had never seen that kind of scene in Houston or any U.S. urban area before, but obviously someone has a couple of horses on their property. I don't even know if it would be legal inside the city limits. I really don't know. I do know that chickens are becoming very popular within urban areas all over the country.

By the way, the "wards" also have areas of gentrification and in some cases very nice, up and coming neighborhoods. But I think the photos of the worst properties are something people need to see. Most people never see anything like some of those pics, including the vast majority of people in Houston.
