container buildings

it seems like there are a lot of these being built, so maybe it's time for them to have their own thread? here's the idea:

Shipping Container Miner’s Hotel in Chilean Desert Capped With Huge Canvas Roof
by Andrew Michler, 04/20/11

The now infamous Chilean Mines are located in the country's northern Atacama Desert -- one of the most inhospitable places on earth for life. Our demand for energy and minerals keeps growing, so finding a way to inhabit one of the driest and sunniest places on earth was the challenge presented to AATA Architects when they were asked to design a low-cost but effective shelter for miners. Their solution was to create a large apartment complex out of shipping containers and drape the entire campus with canvas to protect it from the region's relentless sunshine.

Decameron in São Paulo, Brasil / by studio mk27
By Al Hilal on Friday, June 10, 2011

The showroom of the Decameron furniture store is located on a rented site in the furniture commercial alley in São Paulo. To make the quick and economic construction viable, the project worked with the premise of a light occupation of the lot, basically done with industrial elements, which could easily be assembled.

Exceptional Green Living on Rose Parks in Detroit is finally looking to get off the ground, this year. They have all the approvals, but being a new company, they've not been skilled at attracting investment and capital for the project. Hopefully, this will be the year it gets done.

Exceptional Green Living on Rosa Parks will be a 17-20 units condominium project in Woodbridge, just west of Midtown.

Looking at the very first 'project' shown in this thread and the picture just abvoe this post I am struck by the huge contrast between:
a) the 'honest' use of containers as a cheap, mobile, practical way to erect a small village and the attempt, through shading and the grass/astro turf to improve quality of life (however humbly), vs.
b) the probably viciously expensive, puzzling concept of trying to make a 'high-end' building look prefabricated and/or industrial and/or devoid of any grace other than that provided by the engineering virtuosity of the massing.

I am not a victim of the modern superstition about authenticity, but I think it is fairly evident that aggressive artifice and exhibitionism have no place in a tasteful building.

P.S.
V. interesting thread, thanks.

Large 'containerscrapers' are common now in London building projects of some size. In Brand's "How Buildings Learn", he (provocatively) posited the question of why bother "wet" building when one could just stack containers.

I really like this idea. I'm all about recycling and putting a new use to old things.

There's a bar in downtown that uses them. The area was zoned for vertical mixed use for higher density, and has since then seen a few new residential highrises built along with new bars and restaurants opening.

Next Rainey Street bar will be built from shipping containers

JAY KNOWLES
This model shows architect Jay Knowles' concept for a Rainey Street bar project called Container Bar. It will feature 10 metal shipping containers, each 40 feet long and 10 feet high, around a courtyard with a stage. The owner of three nearby bars, Bridget Dunlap, is behind the project.

Coming soon: Austin's first bar built from recycled metal shipping containers.

Container Bar, located on Rainey Street on downtown's southeastern edge, will feature 10 containers — each 40 feet long and 10 feet high — stacked on top of each other and arranged around a courtyard.

The interiors will be new, but the exteriors will retain their industrial look.

Austin architect Jay Knowles designed Container Bar, which will feature stacked containers at its 30-foot entrance. Each four-ton container will include bathrooms, air conditioning and LED lighting, and is big enough to hold 24 bar stools.

With construction starting next month, Container Bar is scheduled to open in January.

I like that as long as you know the height of one of those containers you can easily calculate the structure's height.

Containers of Hope / by Benjamin Garcia Saxe Architecture
By Al Hilal on Thursday, July 14, 2011

London, June 14, 2011 – Gabriela Calvo and Marco Peralta dreamed of living in their fantastic property 20 minutes outside of the city of San Jose, Costa Rica; where they could be with their horses and enjoy the natural landscape. They made the very bold choice of exploring with me the possibility of creating a very inexpensive house made out of disregarded shipping containers that allowed them to be dept free and live the life they always dreamed of.

it is present in some 25 brazilian cities, about half of them in my state (which makes me think their HQ is here)

Street food revolution housed in shipping containers
Published On Fri Aug 12 2011
By Jennifer Bain Food Editor

There’s a street food revolution happening at Dundas and Bathurst outside the Scadding Court Community Centre.

Eight food and two nonfood vendors have set up stalls inside refurbished shipping containers on the extra-wide Dundas St. sidewalk.

They’re selling everything from hot Indian sandwiches and Korean pancakes to grilled cheese sandwiches, bubble tea, crêpes, ethical meat and freshly fried mini doughnuts.

The Rise and Rise of the Architectural Shipping Container
September 1, 2011

The advent of the shipping container as architectural module and medium probably originated in the late 1950s before being seriously considered in the ’70s, when economic and oil crises provoked new readings and applications of architecture. The idea has recently developed into a full-fledged trend over the last few years, if the proliferation of container-themed projects–everything from schools and homes to think tanks and pavilions, and plenty more–being uploaded daily to our database is to be believed. But an entire market where everything is housed and sold from stacks of shipping containers?
