NYTimes 36 hours in Vancouver (May 25, 2023)

It looks like the New York Times have done one of their 36 hours in ____ articles for Vancouver. I recall them doing this just prior/just after to the Olympics in 2009/10 and quite enjoyed it. The Michelin review of Vancouver seems to have prompted this new piece.

Late last year, the Michelin Man finally came to Vancouver, the coastal British Columbian city. The visit from France’s Michelin Guide was arguably long overdue, and left the city with eight single Michelin-starred restaurants. Of course, there’s more than just food. Vancouver boasts pristine ocean, rugged mountains, glimmering skylines and a truly cosmopolitan culture with influences from China, India and beyond. Visitors are also greeted by a city in transition. As property values have skyrocketed, the gravity of cultural life has shifted eastward — from downtown’s seaside neighborhoods to one-time working-class strongholds like Commercial Drive, areas that are now filling with trendy shops and restaurants. Against this backdrop, with its challenges of gentrification, Vancouver clings to a character all its own.

Not a bad set of recommendations for a new tourist at all. I like the NYTimes 36 hour series and glad to see Vancouver get an update for it.

A bit of a paid-advertisement puff piece, isn't it?

Written by a resident, and lots of tourism guide catch-phrases. I'd rather see an honest reckoning from a non-resident.

I was going to say the same thing after reading it but non-residents are just as bad when it comes to hyping up places and getting funded by Hello BC or whatever. The trip to Lower Lonsdale screams "funded" PR junket.

If you want that, juts scroll through the comments. They range from one L.A. resident saying the DTES is worse than Skid Row and the Tenderloin to a NYC resident saying Vancouver is the best city on the West Coast. And of course there are plenty of people pointing out Vancouver's lack of affordability.

I do appreciate that the various tourism articles about Vancouver typically list different attractions and restaurants. Whether that is because they are all paid, I don't know, but it helps me craft my "to-do" list.

The shipyards in NV is now my favourite place in metro vancouver. it's an incredible asset and has something fun for everyone.

and then walk two blocks to start the best pub crawl in the region.

And it's nice to see the Quay is getting upgraded to match the feel of the Shipyards.

They just need to build the ferris wheel and make it into a real tourist show

Yeah. Shipyards is an asset to the entire region. Very well done project.

What's this pub crawl you speak of? I tend to go to Port Moody if I plan on hitting up multiple breweries.

The "Brewery District", along Esplanade from St. George's to St. Patrick's is jam packed with breweries.

I don't go to North Van that often anymore but on a recent trip I was really impressed with how far Lower Lonsdale has come. I'd recommend a tourist go there over Gastown.

Plus the trip across on the Seabus would add to the experience.

I breathed a huge sigh of relief after reading the Kitsilano part of that article-none of the Really Good places made it for whatever reason.

As to Lower Lonsdale with the exception of the pier the so-called Shipyards is a colossal bore and the Quay won't be worth anyone's time for another 6 months until all the hoardings come down it's just a construction site now.

The lists are fairly biased towards young to middle-aged Caucasian hipsters; not necessarily a bad thing, but they do pass over great stuff like Phnom Penh, Kibune and Anton's (not that I wanted the lineups to get any longer).
