No exact date yet, but based on the timelines that have been thrown around and the progress on the store over the winter it seems like it would be on track for September.

I would think this spring the new roads and parking lot will be finished and then paved and eventually landscaped in the summer.

Want to work at IKEA? Hiring drive happening right now at Mumford Professional Centre in Halifax

There will be several with hiring underway until June.

Store manager says they're trying to fill about 300 jobs. 3,500 have applied so far

blair sanderson @blairhfx

CBC Halifax

10:44 AM - 8 Apr 2017
Looks like according to IKEA they will have most hiring complete by June. That seems to suggest an opening timeline of maybe late August or September.

Was in DC today and there has been some progress on shaping the access road into the Ikea site. It has a sweeping turn to the right as you go uphill between two large piles of compacted rock fill. A bit grim to be honest.

I would like to say hi and tell you I'm happy to have joined this site. My opinion about gravel beside an off ramp is that Keith is being overly critical

Not sure what can be done about the moon landscape right now, but we'll see as summer approaches.

IKEA Columbus, Ohio (shown above) just set an opening date of June 7th. The store is virtually identical to IKEA Halifax.

IKEA Columbus had it's ground breaking May 25th, 2016, IKEA Halifax had it's ground breaking August 9th 2016.

It seems possible they could have IKEA Halifax open by the end of August.

You would think they would do a huge chunk of their business in September so that timeline makes sense.

They can spray paint the gravel blue and yellow for all it matters. They could build that Ikea on a big turd and we'd all still show up!

I just hope they have good signs to control the traffic coming from Moncton. Its easy to get lost in Halifax's highway system.

Not right there at DC necessarily (though I get confused there myself because I am unfamiliar with the street names and hate all the 4-way stops) - but in general, yes, our highway signage leading into and within Halifax and Dartmouth is atrocious, most of it out of the 1950s to match our road network. Following route numbers is at best a challenge, at worst impossible, and destination names are often confusing or nonexistent.

What I hate if coming towards Halifax there are no signs to indicate Darmouth Crossing, just says Truro and something else, nothing to indicate this is the way to go.... Even coming across the bridge, there is nothing to indicate how to get there from Halifax. The Casino was able to get signs posted years ago, why not DC!!!

Exterior pics would be the same as about a month ago.

1) Halifax (of course, already announced)
2) London
3) Quebec City (These two absolutely make sense given their size, and the reception their "pick-up" stores have already enjoyed)
4) Saskatoon or Regina (One, but not both. Sask. is slightly larger, but Regina is in the running since they seem to be the cultural center of Saskatchewan)*
5) Victoria (a bit of a stretch to Vancouver for service, and a lot of interest up and down the gulf island communities I bet)

now it gets tricky...

6) Edmonton II
7) Calgary II
8) Ottawa II (I'd be willing to bet that they will open a second store in these three municipalities that are each over 1,000,000 pop.)

I'm not sure on 9 and 10. Possibly a Vancouver III, and/or a Montreal III. I just don't have a good sense of how busy the current stores are servicing those large markets. Also another Southern Ontario location is possible, either Hamilton (not sure how close the western most Metro TO. store is to Hamilton) or Windsor.

Apologies to Moncton and St. John's. I'm almost certain Moncton will not get a full-size store with one in Halifax, although a pick-up location is a maybe if they continue with more of the concept - Especially once Halifax is running and could serve as a mini-FC. Same for St. John's. I don't think there is enough surrounding population to bolster a full-size store, and Strosjand seemed to be saying that opening in Halifax would make IKEA a true "Coast to Coast" retailer - so I can't hold hope out that they will go any further.

* Also apologies to Saskatoon(ers?) I don't really know enough about Regina/Saskatoon to call one the cultural center of Saskatchewan over the other, except that Regina is the capital city, has Mosaic Field, The RoughRiders, and has hosted the Rolling Stones. Maybe not enough to make Regina a cultural hub, but enough to consider them for IKEA, imho.

A third in the Montreal Area would go to Laval. Quebec City and Regina are natural choices as is Victoria

They could eventually open one in Moncton. Right now, between Greater Moncton, Saint John, Fredericton, Miramichi, all of PEI and Cumberland County in NS you're looking at a market with 733,000 people, all within a 3 hour drive

Throw in the rest of NB and you're lookin at 920,000 people

Eastern GTA probably. closest one to there is North York. Probably one in Whitby or something.

Hamilton is well "served" by the Burlington IKEA.

Kitchener area could see one as well - there are a ton of students around there. Maybe one in Brampton / Milton too.

Moncton is a real stretch. Not big enough of a market. You'll see 10 stores in the GTA before you see one in Moncton.

My list:

1. Halifax
2. Quebec City
3. Laval
4. Whitby
5. Kitchener
6. London
7. Victoria
8. Calgary #2
9. Edmonton #2
10. Ottawa #2

I'm from Moncton and I agree with you. Moncton is just too small to be a primary market for a main IKEA store, but I do think that Moncton should be considered for one of their secondary "pick up and order" stores. The last I heard, IKEA was planning on at least a dozen of these secondary stores nationwide. Moncton's central location for NB/PEI would be ideal for something like this.

In the GTA, I would go with the Trafalgar & Steeles Avenue area (Halton Hills). The new Toronto Premium Outlets mall's parking lot is usually packed and they are now building a multilevel parking garage to expand their parking capacity. From that Halton Hills location they could then draw from Brampton, Mississauga and Milton (and even Guelph and Kitchener). I think that location would be a sure winner (there must be close to 1.5 million people within a 30 - 40 drive) and it is an area that isn't well served by IKEA.
