To me, it makes sense with 430k+ residents and another 1.12M in Buffalo/WNY directly across the border.

congrats Halifax on scoring an Ikea!
That makes sense to me. No IKEA in the Buffalo market? And the Niagara region is full of "destination" attractions. I know it is highly geared towards tourism, how is the shopping scene there?

Presumably, any of the pick-up locations, if successful, would be a target for upgrade to a full-size store. Especially considering the "temporary" or pop-up feel visitors have reported that these first stores have about them.

I was re-watching the video of the Halifax announcement, and had a interesting thought. It was prompted by the wording surrounding the part about "40 years to build 12 stores, now we embark to build 12 more in the next decade". Sjorstrand said "in existing markets, new markets, with existing concepts and new concepts"

I'm curious what is meant by "new concepts". There has been no formal linking of the pick-up locations and the plan to build 12 new stores. In fact there seems to be a deliberate obfuscation of the two plans as seperate, or not. It made me wonder if pick-up locations are ultimately included in the goal of 24 stores by 2026. If so, it could mean that IKEA only intends to build 3 or 4 new full-size stores.

IKEA has always taken a cautious approach to development in Canada. The building of a full-size store takes much of their corporate focus for a period of 2 1/2 to 3 years. If they do embark on a plan to build 12 over 10 years, they will have to overlap construction and make new starts every 10 months or so (to have 12 new full-size stores up and running). That seems extraordinarily ambitious for IKEA.

I reserve judgement for now, but if we've heard no more announcements for full-size stores, or releases to clarify the 10 year plan by this time next year, I think this may be the case.

I was over to DC on Monday to walk the dog in Shubie Park. I cast my eye toward the mountain of rock between the IKEA site and the 118. They appear to be clearing and grubbing the hillside at this point, The four pieces of equipment looked lilliputian on the hill. It will be interesting to see how much equipment they will have to float in to make this site work.
Summer is coming!

If this pic (from DC's facebook page) is of the work taking place in this area, then I can see what you mean...

Ikea expected to have big impact on Dartmouth Crossing

GM: 'Since Ikea's announcement we are seeing several files move more quickly'

By Paul Palmeter, CBC News Posted: Apr 21, 2016 7:30 AM

Construction hasn't even started on Dartmouth Crossing's Ikea store, but some businesses are already claiming turf in the shopping area's vacant spaces, hoping to enjoy the benefits of living next to the retail giant.

Ikea announced in January it will build a full-sized store in the shopping area — the only one in the Maritimes — that's expected to open in 2017.

"Since Ikea's announcement, we are seeing several files move more quickly," said Dartmouth Crossing General Manager Ann-Louise McKinnon.

"Construction of the expansion area is happening north of Wright Avenue and it's now well underway."

Until IKEA opens next year, we now have the first IKEA Collection Point in the country. The Halifax Collection Point is located at:

Sameday Worldwide
10 Isnor Drive
Dartmouth, NS B3B1K5

http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_CA/collect...x.html#halifax

Quote:
$59 SHIPPING FEE
This flat-rate fee covers the delivery of your purchase to the Collection Point, and applies to all online orders regardless of size. More importantly, it can help you save. Ship as little as a single sofa or as much as an entire kitchen, all for a flat-rate shipping fee. This represents a significant savings over the current minimum home delivery fee of $129.

Why was Halifax selected for a Collection Point?

The Halifax Collection Point allows IKEA to expand quickly in to the market. We know our loyal customers in the Halifax area are excited for the new store to open. The Collection Point will allow us to immediately provide our customers with an easier and more affordable shopping experience until our new, full-size store opens next year.

They have a IKEA Halifax FAQ site with some good information:

12. Why was the Halifax market selected?
IKEA Canada announced in late 2015 ambitious plans to double in size by 2025. It took 40 years to build 12 stores and now we will build 12 more in 10 years. We announced we would expand coast to coast and we’re thrilled to be announcing Halifax as our first new store location. As the largest city in Atlantic Canada, with an already existing market share and customer base who currently shop in Montreal or online, we have for a long time considered Halifax as a key market for expansion.

No. According to the Ikea Halifax FAQ, they expect to break ground in late summer.

Yup. I'd be curious, when all is said and done, just how many cubic metres they did move.

Yes, and now if you ordered all the furniture for every room in your house, it's about $55.
Sort of puts credence to: go big or stay home.

IKEA Canada Breaks Ground on New Halifax Store
09-08-2016 02:00  | Store will take 14-16 months to complete and is on track to open in Fall 2017
Burlington, ON – IKEA Canada has officially broken ground on its new store in Halifax.

Located at Dartmouth Crossing, the store will take roughly 14-16 months to complete. It will be approximately 330,000 square feet (30,700 square meters), which is larger than four football fields in size. The IKEA Halifax location will be a destination for the entire family bringing to Nova Scotia what people know and already love about IKEA. Including the full product range and inspirational room sets in the Showroom, Market Hall, Restaurant and SMÅLAND playroom. Customers will be able to take advantage of a suite of services such as home delivery, assembly, planning and returns.

“Halifax residents have been such great supporters of the IKEA brand and the area has always been a key market for expansion,” said David McCabe, Vice President, IKEA Canada. “It took us 40 years to build 12 stores and we are very happy that IKEA Halifax will be the first of 12 new stores to be built over the next 10 years.”

IKEA takes pride in being a great place to work and will be welcoming approximately 300 new co-workers into an engaging environment with a strong focus on people. 50 per cent of IKEA Halifax co-workers will be employed full-time and all co-workers will receive benefits and guaranteed hours, no matter how many hours a week they work.

“We work hard to provide all of our co-workers with an opportunity for professional growth and career development. Anyone who has a passion for home furnishings and energy for customer service is encouraged to apply online at www.IKEA.ca,” said McCabe.

“IKEA will be a major employer in Halifax Regional Municipality and we are very excited to see them in our community,” said Mayor Mike Savage, City of Halifax. “It is a sign of the strength of our growing economy. We welcome any new businesses to Halifax Regional Municipality, especially progressive, sustainable companies like IKEA.”

IKEA Halifax will be constructed to operate as the most sustainable IKEA store in Canada, with a particular focus on energy efficiency and waste avoidance, and will be the first LEED certified IKEA store in Canada. Key features of the store will include a rooftop solar photovoltaic installation to provide electricity to the store, geothermal energy generation to support heating and cooling needs, as well as 100% LED lighting. Waste management equipment will be installed to maximize material recycling and diversion from landfill, and a free take-back service will be offered for household batteries and light bulbs to ensure the hazardous materials contained are recycled responsibly.

To support their shopping experience, residents of the Halifax area will begin to receive the 2017 IKEA Catalogue, beginning August 15th. There will be seven million catalogues sent out across the country, including 154,000 copies in the Halifax area. The 2017 IKEA Catalogue can also be viewed online at www.IKEA.ca after August 23rd.

As we await the store opening, customers who purchase home furnishings can now choose to pick up their products at the recently opened Halifax Collection Point, for a flat rate of $50 compared to the average home delivery fee of $150.

The Halifax store will be the first to open as part of a coast-to-coast expansion effort which will double the store count from 12 to 24 in the next 10 years and will increase the number of co-workers to 10,000. It’s the goal of IKEA Canada to be wherever its customers are and to provide them with the services they expect, whether that’s in a store, on our website, at a Pick-up and order point or a Collection Point.
