Did we never have a thread on this? Just did a search and didn't find anything.

Evidence is mounting that Apple has picked a location for its new campus that could create as many as 10,000 jobs

It increasingly looks as though the new Apple campus could land in Cary, North Carolina, close to Duke University, where several top Apple executives went to school.

On Wednesday, Raleigh's WRAL news outlet cited sources as saying that the Apple campus is a "done deal" and that the only hurdle left is for the North Carolina Statehouse to pass a package of tax incentives to score the $1.5 billion investment from Apple.

Imagine if Raleigh - RTP area landed both Amazon and Apple.

It makes me think Raleigh is less likely to get Amazon-which we all know is going to DC anyways.

I also like how Tim Cook recently criticized Amazon for it's subsidy contest when they're quietly doing exactly the same thing and they no doubt used whatever NC offered Amazon as leverage. These companies are such garbage.

It totally makes sense that Apple would choose the RTP area. Amazon less so, especially if Apple does land there. No way Raleigh-Durham could absorb both.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Apple's campus was supposed to be pretty low-wage customer service type work right? If you're doing that sort of thing, there's no reason not to do it in a suburban office park. It's hardly "creative class."

I think it's supposed to be more than just customer service type jobs, will include some techie types as well.

It wouldn't make a lot of sense to put it in the "Research Triangle" close not only to Duke but also UNC, NC State and Wake Forest just to make a call center. This is a prime, and not overly tapped, source of tech talent. Very few places outside maybe Boston do you have this number of large research universities so close together. If they wanted another call center, they wouldn't call it a "second HQ" and they could put it in a part of NC or some other state with higher unemployment rates and plenty of lower skill workers--eastern NC for example.

Is there a more uber-suburban location than Cary?

I'm over at SAS hq twice a year (amazing campus), and that town seems to be the ultimate in suburbia. I think a property is "historic" if it's more than three years old. I almost feel like I'm in some alternate reality.

I think it would probably be pretty fitting for Apple. Cheap, low taxes, skilled tech workforce, and business friendly. Not even a hint of urbanity, but I doubt they care.

Which isn't really that far from the Triangle, about a 4.5-5 hour drive depending on traffic. Raleigh/Durham and even Charlotte and Atlanta are the southern end of the East Coast Megalopolis on the I-95/85 corridor.

Maybe they will build another circular spaceship in Cary? lol. I detest that thing they built sitting out in suburbia. A giant ring like a fortress or circled wagons. Could anything possibly turn it's back away from the outside any more than that place? Like an enclosed corporate mall.
