Here's Montreal's Victoria Bridge which opened in 1860 and started as a covered bridge for the Grand Trunk railroad. It is 1800metres long and was built in 6 years at the cost of 6,8 million dollars which was a pretty penny back then. Anyways, we are about to demolish Champlain Bridge, by far the busiest span in Canada to build a new one in its place because it is 50 some odd years and is about to fall any minute... Go figure.

This baby is still carrying cars in one direction alternating btwn citybound and the south shore A.M and P.M. and it is used of course intensively by trains both passenger and freight.

Here's a video by an NFB filmmaker about the bridge's history.

Damn... And it only took 61 posts for someone to mention something from the City of Bridges!!

I can't argue against the Hot Metal (29th Street Bridge), but for me it would be a toss-up between the West End Bridge and Ft. Wayne RR Bridge. The latter was built as a double-deck railroad bridge linking Pittsburgh with the city of Allegheny (present-day Downtown and the North Side)

Eh, you know something? I think I'd have to go with the Ft. Wayne RR Bridge. They ruined the West End Bridge when they decided to put a freeway interchange on the northern end...

For my current city of Charleston South Carolina I'm going with the Ravenel Bridge. Charleston is full of unique bridges, but none of them can quite compare to it.

I like the industrial design in this bridge. Nice!

The Raleigh and Nashville bridges are really cool, too. I would go a few miles out of my way to check them out.

Thanks for posting.

The Royal Gorge Bridge is not a particularly beautiful bridge, but it's location can't be beat.

The Eastern span of the Bay Bridge. The largest single anchor suspension bridge in the world. Also, I personally love the offset tower compared to the spans on either side.

The Swinging Bridge at Grandfather Mountain in NC might give it a run for it's money.

How could I choose anything else. 1 walkway, 1 bus lane, 7 general traffic lanes, 2 track train line and a cycleway. Opened in 1932, is the lynchpin of Sydney's circulation and looks like the heaviest friggin' thing on earth. There's many bridges in Sydney including some gorgeous lesser known ones but i'd be lying if I said this wasn't my favorite, it's a triumph and and undeniable point of pride.

Can I also say this is a great thread, i've seen a ton of stuff i've never seen before. I've been reading 'The Power Broker' about Robert Moses and it's good to see lots of New York stuff.

This is as close as you're going to get to a city near that bridge.

Here's my favorite bridge that's actually in Denver. It's the Highlands Pedestrian Bridge over I-25 connecting the Highlands neighborhood to downtown Denver. There are two more bridges that help connect Highlands that go over a rail yard and the Platte River, but since I'm limited to one, here's my favorite:

I didn't say there was a city...it was in response to another similar bridge that looked to be far from a city.

I'd say this one does the trick - Sidu River Bridge, Hubei Province, China. Also the bridge that took the title of highest bridge away from the Royal Gorge Bridge.

I've always been partial to the Suspension Pedestrian Bridge over Fall Creek gorge in Ithaca. It crosses from Cornell Heights neighborhood to the main Cornell campus. We use to swim in the creek just below the waterfall shown when I was a young whippersnapper.

The Sidu River Bridge must of been a great challenge to build. That drop is pretty high. The views from it look amazing.
