Good photo showing the overall result of the last building boom, there are at least 4 new visible buildings in that photo and maybe another 2-3 not visible.

That's very big news. This will be close to our major universities along with HCC Main Campus and UHD. Not to mention, it should have pretty good access to public transportation.

Skanska’s Capitol Tower in downtown Houston tops out

Quote:
Downtown Houston’s newest skyscraper has reached its highest point.

New York-based Skanska USA Commercial Development held a topping out ceremony for Capitol Tower on April 4. Members of the development, design and construction crew signed the ceremonial beam before it was hoisted to the top of the 35-story tower.

Gensler designed the 750,000-square-foot tower, which broke ground last summer and is expected to be complete in 2019. The building is at 811 Rusk St., on the site of the former Houston Club building, which was demolished in October 2014.

Houston Zoo launches $150M capital campaign for new exhibits, campus overhaul

Quote:
The Houston Zoo opened its doors on a two-acre site in Hermann Park in 1922. It boasted a single bison and a few monkeys and other mammals, most of which were exotic pets donated by Houstonians. Fast forward 95 years, and the zoo's 55-acre campus is home to more than 7,000 animals and 450 employees.

A lot of that's about to change, though.

The Houston Zoo announced April 5 a $150 million capital campaign that'll go toward developing a 20-year master plan that completely reimagines the 55-acre campus. The first phase of the plan will include four new exhibits and the redevelopment of at least half of the zoo's campus, according to Houston Zoo CEO Lee Ehmke. It'll wrap up in 2022, just in time for the zoo's 100th anniversary. For perspective, around $150 million in improvement efforts have taken place at the zoo since 2002, Ehmke said.

"This is one of the most important days in the zoo's history," Ehmke said.

The $150 million will finance the first phase of the plan; future capital campaigns will be launched throughout the next 20 years, Cullen Geiselman said. Geiselman, alongside Houston-based Harvey Builders' Joe Cleary, are co-chairing the capital campaign.

Yes. Due to the effects of Harvey. Plus they can fly into other dimensions. You should see it in person. Very trippy.

Tilman Fertitta's The Post Oak Hotel now open

http://www.thepostoakhotel.com/

Quote:
After years of anticipation, Houston billionaire Tilman Fertitta's The Post Oak Hotel in the Uptown area has finally made its debut.

The $350 million, 38-story hotel is officially open at 1600 West Loop South, according to a March 12 press release.

The hotel — with an exterior made of limestone, granite, and marble — is the centerpiece of the 10-acre mixed-use project that includes restaurants, retail, office and events space and more. The Houston office of San Francisco-based Gensler was the architect and Houston-based Tellepsen was the general contractor.

Prices per night currently range between $359 and $499, according to The Post Oak's website.

I saw there were a lot of job openings to work in this building in some capacity or another.

Like most of the older buildings rehabbed downtown in the past few years, it will probably be a cleaning of the exterior or some similar improvements. The focus is on converting the building from office to hotel.

The 2017 article detailing the sale to the hotel group gives a few hints of this.

Quote:
The hotelier's plans in Houston to redevelop the Art Deco skyscraper, which was built in 1927, at 1314 Texas St. come on the heels of Choice Hotel executives partnering with Dallas developer John Kirtland.

Choice Hotels plans on opening its new Cambria-branded hotel in the historic Tower Petroleum building in Dallas by this December. The hotel will be named Cambria Tower Petroleum Dallas.

"Based on the experience we have had in Dallas, we wanted to also develop the downtown Houston Petroleum Building — they are sister properties," Janis Cannon, senior vice president of upscale brands at Choice Hotels, told the Dallas Business Journal.

"The two buildings both have the same Art Deco design and are named the same," Cannon said. "We are really excited about these projects. They both embody what Cambria offers, which is an authentic experience."

SABIC considers site in Katy for new headquarters

Quote:
Saudi Basic Industries Corp., more commonly called SABIC, is considering building a new headquarters for its U.S. operations in Houston, making room to more than double its employee base in the Bayou City.

The company purchased more than 60 acres on Franz Road in Katy in 2015, according to Harris County Appraisal District records, and spokeswoman Susan LeBourdais confirmed that would be the site of the company’s new central U.S. office.

The company is in the scoping and design phase right now that LeBourdais said would likely be completed by the end of the year, at which point SABIC will make a decision to proceed with the project.

Right now, SABIC employs about 400 people in Houston, but the new headquarters would be able to hold 1,000 employees, LeBourdais said.

Sears building will be restored, along with the official announcement, they've begun removing the facade.

Historic Midtown Sears building to anchor Houston innovation district

Quote:
“The innovation district will leverage the region’s unique economic strengths and help transform Houston into a world leader in data science and digital technologies centered on energy, industrial, health care and logistics industries,” said Rice President David Leebron. “We aim to attract talent and support all stages of the innovation life cycle through state-of-the-art resources, incubators and accelerators, classroom and event space, technology, prototyping facilities, networking opportunities and entrepreneurship support and training.”

The district will combine a variety of commercial uses with housing, food and entertainment, iconic public space and best-in-class infrastructure, Leebron said. “The surrounding neighborhoods’ vibrant and rich culture will be embraced to create an eclectic, engaging streetscape that blends the historic with the new and celebrates Houston’s diversity,” he said.

“This will be an innovation and incubation facility for all Houston. Rice owns the property, but the enterprise will be a collaborative mix of many different participants and activities,” Leebron said.

In developing these plans, Rice worked closely with the GHP, HX and Station Houston, the region’s hub for tech innovation and entrepreneurship focused on digital technologies. Station Houston will serve as incubator and amenity program operator and will work on three key initiatives: connecting ecosystem players to drive high-impact collaborations; supporting entrepreneurs and the innovation community through a range of programs, workshops and events; and working with academic institutions and other groups to develop and connect Houston’s digital workforce.

“Transformative,” John Reale Jr., co-founder and CEO of Station Houston, said of the project. “Today we take a major step forward toward our shared vision of transforming Houston into a world-leading tech innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem. This could not be possible without the ongoing collaboration of Houston’s academic institutions, corporations, major institutions, investors and entrepreneurs. We applaud Rice for its vision and commitment in leading this community effort.”

“The district will serve as the central anchor of Houston’s innovation corridor, a concentration of activity that has already piqued the interest of several major companies looking to build synergies with our startups and innovators,” said Bob Harvey, GHP president and CEO. “To have a physical hub for this collaboration is exactly what Houston needs and is another positive step forward for our community.”

“The formation of the innovation district is a significant milestone in the implementation of the 10-point strategic plan we announced in 2017 to build a world-class innovation ecosystem in Houston,” said HX Chairwoman Gina Luna. “This announcement builds on the momentum we’ve created over the last year, including the formation of HX and the HX Venture Fund. This is incredibly exciting for Houston.”

The former Sears building will be renovated for the project. The overall design and development of the building will be led by Hines in conjunction with architects Gensler and James Carpenter. The initial phase is expected to be completed within two years. The redevelopment of the building will respect its historic character while making the modifications required to create dynamic space for creative companies in the innovation ecosystem, Leebron said.

“The many participants already committed to this vision typify Houston’s collective spirit of inclusivity and entrepreneurship, and we welcome people and organizations who can contribute to its overarching mission,” he said.
