I believe they seem to be making progress towards prepping for the demolition of the strip mall. The Bargain Store and one other store (I can't remember which) are closing - making it likely the rest of the stores there will be gone soon too.

Apparently due to the lease agreements with some of the existing tenants, this project will be phased. The west side of the strip mall will be demolished allowing for first tower to be erected, while the east end of the strip mall will remain intact (temporarily). Not sure on a start date, but I do know detailed design work is underway.

That's quite typical in these cases - so that's good news. It will likely all work out in the wash that as the first phase is finishing, they will be able to giver for the second.

I'm happy about anything that sees the destruction of strip-malls. I wish that the plans for the new build saw rear-parking or underground parking, rather than the urban-desert feel that parking adjacent to the sidewalk creates... but it's a slight step forward I guess.

You must feel sick to your stomach whenever you visit places like Bayer's Lake, Burnside, or Moncton.

Bayer's lake? Best just take off and nuke the site from orbit... It's the only way to be sure.

Never before have I seen a more miserable place. Human beings have no business being there.

Trying to get from the sidewalk to a shop entrance involves a 90 day trek across an ocean of asphalt, where every second you run the risk of being mown down due to the complete absence of walkways.

*shudder*

Whilst I'm ranting, last summer, as I was walking down Spring Garden, a passing cruise-ship tourist asked me where the main shopping streets in Halifax were. I just made some apologetic statements about our downtown. I really couldn't direct him to Bayer's Lake... Can you imagine the tales he would have told about Halifax upon returning home?

From the looks of this, it sounds like a spring 2014 start.

I've spoken with the owners of Michaels and they are going to be relocating sometime in the fall

This project has been placed on hold. Due to a change in ownership apparently.

Also, the name I'm seeing for this development is 'The Mall On Young'

I can't picture this being on hold for very long with no tenants in the building

^There are some tenants remaining. The bigger names relocated but there are some still hanging on so they might be enough to break even until the time is better for development in the owners eyes.

^That is correct. There are still two tenants remaining in the building but the western half is fenced off for demolition (no permit issued yet as far as I can find).

This is just around the corner from other blogged projects so I will keep my eye on it and track it with #6100Young. Halifax Developments Blog
