Is there any way I could get these pics emailed to me or re-hosted? I'd like to share them.

Well the good city-planning folks of Wasilla managed to mess up big time. Thanks for the photos though. Looks like at one time, it may have been a nice area to visit.

I got to see the pics before the bandwidth thing. I feel the big mountains and Palmer even though it's small. Not at all for Wasilla. I got a better appreciation for Anchorage with the photo at the end. Civilization! (more or less)

That call to shoot "Twin Peaks" (?) in North Bend/Cle Elum, WA was spot-on. Almost like separated at birth.

No. Wasilla is the largest city and commercial hub of the MatSu valley. The reason for all the strip malls is that Wasilla is the hub for the valley, which is Alaska's third most populous area behind Anchorage and Fairbanks, with over 80,000 people. Wasilla is more centrally located, which is probably why is has developed as the valley's hub over Palmer.

Where is this 80,000 number coming from? The population of Wasilla itself is only 7,025 residents (as of 2008 according to Wikipedia).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasilla,_Alaska

I guess the 80,000 number is counting the entire metro (Wasilla and Palmer), not including of course Anchorage. Is this right, mthq?

According to Wikipedia, the population of Palmer was 6,920 in 2005.

Our next possible VP ran that tow ? Wow. No disrespect meant towards the town or it's people, but there is absolutely no order, rhyme or reason to anything there.

From what I know of, the 80,000 number is the population of the Mat-su Borough which consists of Wasilla, Palmer, Houston, Big Lake, and Willow. The thing is however, those other towns are even smaller than Palmer let alone Wasilla, so I don't know how they are able to total up to 80k

As much as I like poking fun at Wasilla (for obvious reasons), I gotta admit it doesn't look as bad as many North American suburban type towns. Ugly, though. Strangely enough, the photos remind me of the main commercial strip of Hilo, Hawaii (e.g., Walmart, Ross, fast food franchises, etc.).

Was wondering what that looked like, Mthq.

One off topic question, though: Is Palin's accent typical of Alaska?

Nice photos. Like the others said, Palmer looks nice. Wasilla looks like precisely the type of place that would spawn the Antichrist.

Of course, the mountains near Wasilla were created only a few thousand years ago.

I think Wasilla has improved alot if you compare it to the 90s.

nice pics....i was expecting a better developed town..a town with 8,000 with a sports arena and a Target and so many other retail? wow....seems pretty small for a big box and sport complex...maybe Wasilla wants to feel "bigger".. even though its area pop is 80,000 people, its still pretty small...In a Palin interview they mentioned that she turned a debt-free city into a city with millions in debt, by building this sports arena and other bad laws she made.

Next time, take photos of the library and the abortion clinic. I want to see if they really exist.
