Yea..I really dig the look of that Montreal hospital...looks like a medical hospital from New York. If they saved one or two of the tallest brick towers that would be great....though It doesn't seem so in the plans.

Why did they tear down that little stone cottage in Hamilton?
A big box shopping plaza is taking it's place unfortunately.

The remaining portion will be incorporated into the podium of a 34 & 25 floor development...

The Empire Landmark Hotel in Vancouver's West End will soon be demolished.

http://mapio.net/o/123715/

Will be replaced with two bland condo towers.

First pic, the tallest building. I have always loved that building; sad to see it go, replaced by crap!

Really? Wow, once it's knocked down that will have to rank among the tallest demolitions ever in Canada. Surely the tallest demolition in Western Canada, excluding industrial stuff like smokestacks and telecom infrastructure.

According to SSP database, the tallest demolition in Canada to date was the stack at the Thunder Bay generating station, 106.7m. Tallest building destroyed was Toronto's Sutton Place Hotel, 104m. The Empire landmark stands at 115.8m, taking the record by quite a margin.

I'm quite a pro development guy (obviously), but this one I'm against. I know I'm trying to hold back the tide as it's likely a done deal but the Empire is a neighbourhood landmark and a great example of it's time. Will be a sad loss.

Curse greed and the ease with which that city delivers demolition permits.

I used to think it was still way too easy to get a demolition permit in Quebec but Vancouver really puts it into perspective.

Yeah, The Sutton Place is a grey area. It was stripped down to its concrete and steel structure to be incorporated in a new development. Personally, I don't consider that tower demolition.

Could not agree more.

30 years from now this will be seen as a great loss, similar to the countless pre war buildings demolished in the 1960s.

I have been vocal about this since the proposal came out.

It is also one of the few towers to actually make a decent impact with its lighting features in the night sky in Vancouver.

In Vancouver's West End...four towers, four demolitions?

Tower on the left of the pic is the Empire Landmark on Robson. Might be replaced by two towers of 28 and 30 storeys. 1488 Robson Street.

Second from the left tower might be replaced by one 42 storey tower. 1640-1650 Alberni Street.

Two towers on the right might be replaced by one 39 storey tower. 1684 Alberni Street. More renderings. The tower second from the right (1668 Alberni) was built in 1990.

Sept.23 '17, my pic

I still can't believe they're going to tear down the empire landmark. For me it's as iconic to the van skyline as the chateau champlain is to mtl.

It makes me incredibly angry and I find it amazing how so few people realize that this is the exact same mistake being made again as the countless pre-war structures that torn down in the 60s to 80s.

It is an iconic tower and a fantastic bold representation of its architectural style and era.

Guaranteed 30 / 40 years from now people will look back and compare it to the bland condo towers being built in its place and wonder how we could let it happen.

It's one thing to replace it with a bold tower, another to replace it with what is being proposed. Blasphemy!

The tower on the right is also a bold example of 'brutalism' and has always been one of my favourite small high-rise towers in the West End. Can't believe there's so little regard for these.

for crying out loud Vancouver.. replace an iconic tower with another iconic tower if demolition absolutely has to happen… but to replace the empire tower with that garbage makes absolutely no sense. what a disgrace.

Vancouver has never cared about heritage. As befitting a city founded on a real estate play (moving the CPR terminus from Port Moody to Granville) it has always been about flogging real estate. It's merely sunk to an even lower level lately.
