Why must all space be filled? Calm down!
I agree. Eventually, some of the land could be put to better use, but until then, there are plenty of other plots in the city that are of a higher priority.

The citadel is built on a hill (drumlin really) for a reason. The flanks of the hill are difficult to climb and would slow down any attacking enemy. The sides of the hill were cleared of all vegetation and obstructions so that it would provide clear sight lines for the defenders to see the attackers and to fire upon them as they advanced upon the fortress.

You could replant the hillside with trees and shrubbery but this would interfere with the historical accuracy of the site. Since the citadel is owned by Parks Canada, I imagine they would be rather disinclined to allow this to happen.

In addition to maintaining historical accuracy, a second reason to keep the hillsides grassy would be to maintain the view from the top. Although the "Save the View" crowd in Halifax is pretty strident, there is no question that the view of the city and the harbour from the top is magnificent.

I am a strong proponent of trees, but in the historical and topographical context of the citadel, they shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the ramparts.

I visited the Citadel for the first time this summer (cool place) and I agree it should be kept grassy for all these reasons.

That's probably the best picture of London I have ever seen. You should post that on its wikipedia page!

London gets a bad rep because of the terrible vantage points but that one is really good .

Good to see the dirt mounds are now grassy mounds. When do the trees go in?

I was trying to find the best place to take pictures of Sault Ste. Marie and I found it to be in another country.
The Sault's 3rd and 4th tallest buildings by the Pine Street Marina, located 2.5km from downtown.

Downtown Sault Ste. Maire

I found a great location that shows some good density in the city.

That one shot looks good, but don't think it really shows "density" it just happens to line up all the taller buildings in one shot.... Seems like there is a lot of space between them...

Hey, no Windsor! What are we chopped liver? We're bigger than some of these cities you posted! Places like Corner Brook and Dundas we're 9 or 10x bigger and yet we're not on the list.

Weird. It goes to show you how often and easily we're overlooked down here in the banana region of Canada.
