Someone from SkyscraperPage is visiting Austin at the moment while they're in Texas, and he caught some video of the bats flying out, plus the spire and light tests on the Fairmont.

When I was a freshman at UT in 1989, the Frank Erwin Center was where everyone registered for their classes. It was a huge event, made obsolete only a couple of years later when they switched to phone registration.

So no, you are not the only fan of this building, and I'll be sad to see it go -- although my fandom is from memories of college and the shows I've seen there (including SRV on his last tour). Nothing really to do with the lighting or how the building looked, which I honestly have never really thought about...

Yeah, I only realized it wouldn't work after I'd posted it.

Is anyone able to take pics of the lights at night? I want to see what the finished product looks like, assume they're done with testing and it'll all be lit up.

I was hoping they were going to make the spire look slick, but then how would they ever change the light bulb?

I didn't see it tonight but I don't think it's lit yet. They are probably waiting till they get close to opening. They might even have some sort of grand lighting event. Remember they did something like that for Frost. Or they could turn them on sometime this week, I guess someone who has inside info could pop on and post. I'm also really looking forward to seeing the finished product.

I think it would have looked nice covered but it will look pretty cool the way it is especially with the lights ringing each segment. What I want to know is if the lighting is just plain white like we saw or can they change colors as well.

That's great news about the lighting.

They now have an apparent opening date - Friday, December 1. At least that's the first day rooms can be reserved according to their website. I suspect they might have a soft opening before that. Rooms can be had for as low as $349 per night with their "Opening Celebration Package".

I'll be staying at the fairmont late December, I'll try to get some pictures of the interior and exterior too.

A picture of the red lights. It's not entirely across the top section for whatever reason. Looks great!

Nice. The lighting is looking more and more like it will be a significant feature of this building.

Hopefully the lights go all the way around and change up a lot. Is the spire just white light?

My thinking is they are still working out the crown lighting but yes, this building will have a dramatic affect on the skyline at night.
