What Cities Have You Been To That Have That Certain "Je ne sais quoi"

Unique vibe, Pulse, Spirit, Soul, Buzz?

I'm not that well travelled, but I certainly got that from Montreal and Philadelphia for whatever reason.

Both Toronto and NYC never gave me that..Maybe because they are both busy cities if that makes any sense?. Dunno

Anymore?

old cities that are also a bit slow (like, not los angeles fast) usually exude some sort of something something. like new orleans/pittsburgh, cities with lots of wet 19th century housing.

nashville is getting pretty watered down with yoga studios full of people from indiana. memphis has a little more old vibe.

I'd say DC and Tokyo.

I need to do NYC right. I've only ever been while its snowing.

I feel like Austin is changing, and not necessarily for the better - can't put my finger on what it though.

The older I get, the more I find myself captivated by smaller cities (probably because I live in a city of 70,000 myself). It doesn't take much to impress me beyond a cohesive urban environment (no matter how small) and access to a major waterway (ironic considering I've lived in mostly desert environments the past 20 years).

The more I've thought about this, in addition to Chicago and Charleston, SC, the three cities I've visited in the past two years that have really blown me away were Charlotte Amalie in the U.S. Virgin Islands; Juneau, AK and Victoria, BC.

Definitely New York City. When I visited a friend, I was always a hop, skip, and a jump from whatever I needed.

DC comes close because of its rapid transit system, but the region is still heavily reliant on automobiles and the rapid transit lines don't web out to enough communities.

New Orleans might be another example considering its walk-ability and similarities to more dense cities. Re-introduction of the streetcars (and the expansion of the system) is very encouraging.

Kyoto, every second of every day! For the rest of Asia that I've been to, Hong Kong and Ho Chi Minh come close to Kyoto, with more raw energy but less regal timelessness.

Quebec City, New Orleans, and Charleston SC for North American cities that I've visited.

Taipei. Definitely a city I'd like to spend more time in.

EDIT: I should add that Taizhong really gave me a great vibe for the brief time I was there, and I'd love to go back there again too.

This feeling is what originally lured me to Pittsburgh a decade ago. Recently, it's been Mexico City and Berlin. The right speeds, textures, grit, lush overgrown greenery. For the US, strangely attracted to Atlanta (?). Hoping to check New Orleans off my bucket list later this year, finally.
