honestly i kind of have a thing for those old Aces.
Said it before and I'll say it again - I don't know what I am going to do when this project is under construction and the Ace is closed for a year. I am at that store at least twice a month. The store is well stocked and the employees know what the f*ck they are talking about. I would rather go to an Ace or True Value over a Lowe's or Home Depot any day (except for plants).

That said, the building they are putting up doesn't look awful....and I will get my Ace back.

Glad I moved out before the SuperMercado was closed - nothing like a butchers shop in an old porno theater.

July 1992

SW corner Dakin and Sheridan (across from the ACE), here you can see after they moved out of the old building (old stables) into the "new" building. This lot is now a 5 story apt building.

Curious about this as well, there's been no activity on that site since they razed the building. There's a big gap in the fence about 2/3rds of the way up the site (north) along Milwaukee. There's pieces of hexagonal stone tile everywhere from the facade, if anyone is interested in little 'souvenirs' like that I'd recommend checking it out before they actually start doing something there. You don't have to walk more than a foot or two into the site before you start finding tiles.

It;s funny, when I saw the sign I didn't think of the Wes Craven movie or anything Harry Potter (which I tell people with my pride I've never seen or read) but instead thought of the hip-hop group from the 90s.

Do the doors actually have any significance, do they work well, are they good for what they will be used for in the future? I think on the list of egregious acts of disrespect to history this one ranks at below the bottom.

Those doors look fairly modern and generic, I highly doubt they are original to the building or have any significance. I'm sure the various floors of the Tribune Tower have been repurposed and remodeled many times over the years. Nothing to see here.

Was over at MSI last night and saw Solstice on the Park. It looks really nice, only a few levels of glass left to go it. Sorry no pics....was not exactly good photography weather!

Those are definitely the standard historic door format for the building, and that's the standard historic trim found throughout the building right above it in the photo. Whether these are really historic features or more recent replicas, I'm not sure.

I did some work in the building back in 2014. Most floors, at least as far as corridors go were still intact: marble flooring and wainscoting, mahogany doors and trim, transom lights, brass or bronze hardware. Unfortunately one of my architect friends from SCB leaked an in progress residential floor plan for the building a few months ago. All of those remaining historic corridors get torn out as well as the buildings stairwells and all but two elevators in order to make a more efficient residential layout with less and narrower hallways.

I agree that this is much about nothing, it's not like they tossed the doors of the Florence Baptistery in the dumpster.

These were probably broken, dysfunctional or otherwise lousy in some way and will likely be replaced with historically accurate, or at least appropriate, replacements. I'm getting bored just writing about this.

Or maybe just redundant. When you repurpose a floor of offices into something with larger spaces you wind up with lots of extra spare parts. Most people would save and resue the best and get rid of the pieces not needed.

i mean at a minimum assuming those are mahogany or some other similar rare/expensive wood, relegating to a landfill seems pretty poor form. Urban Remains would throw those things on their showroom floor and price them at 1k a piece.

^No doubt I'm in full agreement they should have recycled them to some architiectural salvage place or even a ReStore if they were still usable. People like us probably would have shit our pants at the luck of picking up a pair of doors from the Tribune Tower that could be repurposed or hung again in our homes. That said, the fact they were thrown out still doesn't meet my requirements for universally shocking injustice.

not injustice, but if this is the level of callousness theyre taking to stuff like trimwork and other additional details, im not exactly feeling confident about the sensitivity theyre going to take with the rest of the project (which IS a historic landmark and pretty well preserved....). we all know how cool something can turn out when its in the right hands (see: athletic club remodel). we also know how irreversible poor and insensitive remodels can be.
