of course, they were born out of different worlds. philly was a walking city of merchants, importers, small markets, tradesman, carts, storefront-sized manufacturing concerns. chicago was born into (and gave birth to) a world of steam and iron, trans-continental railroads, large scale mechanization and natural/agricultural resource processing on a vast scale.
of course by 1900 they were both doing similar things but had been indelibly shaped by the worlds into which they had been born.
