Yes. I indeed recall this to be the backstory; but I also recall the '80s to be not exactly the most inspiring time period for...how shall I put this...spiritually moving architecture.
Maybe at some future point they can repent of this missed opportunity.

The view of One Vanderbilt (under construction) from my 45th floor office at 101 Park Ave. This week, I lost my view of the office buildings on Sixth Ave. and, soon, my view of 30 Rockefeller Plaza (background center) will be greatly reduced.
But he will have a nice view of One Vanderbilt, with the bonus of 53w53 and Steinway.

New fall views ~ #OneVanderbilt’s steel superstructure now stands at 35 floors with concrete infill up to floor 26. Its distinctive terra-cotta facade panels began installation at the end of the summer and now reach floor 6!

The skyscraper #onevanderbilt is growing up so fast. Already have windows on the first floors. This building is going to be incredible and ridiculous. Just next to the famous Grand Central Terminal right in the middle of the heart of Manhattan. Amazing!!!

Nothing about the facade bothers me. I find it refreshing, especially compared to all of the blue glass towers lately.
