GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Michigan State University is pushing forward with plans to construct two more buildings on its Grand Rapids Research Center site, the university announced Friday. MSU’s Board of Trustees authorized university administrators to enter into a public-private partnership with Health Innovation Partners to develop the projects at 400 Monroe Ave. NW, the roughly 4-acre site where the research center is located. The partnership agreement lays the groundwork for the developer to pursue the construction of a parking garage and a new building along Michigan Street, where space would be leased to MSU and other tenants...

Van Andel Arena, DeVos Performance Hall rank among busiest U.S. venues

Quote:
GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Van Andel Arena and DeVos Performance Hall have once again been recognized by music-industry publications for ranking among the busiest venues of their size in the U.S.

Among venues with a capacity between 10,001 and 15,000, Van Andel was listed as the third busiest venue in North America in 2018 by Billboard. It was also ranked as the fifth busiest venue, of its size-range, in North America by VenuesNow.

Acts such as Thomas Rhett, Elton John, Shania Twain and James Taylor contributed to the venue’s success last year, according to a news release from the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority. The CAA is the public authority that owns the arena and DeVos Performance Hall.

Meanwhile, DeVos Performance Hall was ranked 15th on VenuesNow’s top stops list among venues with capacity between 2,001 and 5,000. The performance hall hosted acts such as Lauren Daigle, Alice Cooper, Lindsey Stirling and David Byrne.

Michigan’s first ever rooftop solar array and battery storage system debuted last week in the growing area of Grand Rapids. Nearly 1,800 solar panels atop the Bridge Street Market and adjoining buildings between Bridge and First Streets within the Circuit West district are accompanied nearby by a 500-kilowatt battery.

“Today, there is very little storage on the grid, so electricity is generated just moments before you use it,” said Garrick Rochow, Consumers Energy’s senior vice president of operations. “With large batteries, we will make our grid more efficient, effective and sustainable. It’s a critical part of Michigan’s energy future and it’s happening here at Circuit West.”...

Getting a peek at a rendering for the new school portion of the Roosevelt Park redevelopment. Referred to as Southwest Community Campus High School, it is going to break ground this spring, on land purchased by the school district in January. Construction costs for the school are estimated at $20 million. The school will feature bilingual curriculum to serve the largely-Latino population of the neighborhood.
