King Abdullah Financial District, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
A new financial district in Riyadh merges local urban traditions with advanced sustainable building technology

In 2006, Henning Larsen Architects (HLA) won the international competition to design a masterplan for the new financial district in the centre of Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh. The brief called for the plan to draw inspiration from the Arabian landscape while creating a sustainable urban core for the city.

Carefully considering the brief, HLA has developed a masterplan for the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) that combines function with innovative design. The plan will not only service the financial world, but will create an integrated community, rendering the KAFD socially sustainable. The plan is unified by an interpretation of a Wadi, acting as an open promenade, linking together 3,300,000 sq m of financial institutions, retail, residential towers, sports facilities, and cultural centres.

jian junkai + huang jinqi: busan opera house

china based jian junkai + huang jinqi have submitted a proposal for the 'busan opera house' international design competition for busan, south korea. projecting into the harbor, this building will serve as a performing arts center designed to house high class operas and simultaneously promote an increase in artistic activities in the city. different scales of concert arenas are introduced ranging from public open areas to more intimate spaces, as well as the grand opera house auditorium welcoming all kinds of performers including ballet dancers, opera singers, musical goups, street dancers and jazz musicians. the intended result of the program's flexibility is to provide a stage for all individuals to present their talent to the spectators. the subsequent outcome is to break away from the preconception that event attendance is reserved for the privileged, but instead open to all social classes.

schmidt hammer lassen architects: the crystal

copenhagen-based practice schmidt hammer lassen architects has recently completed 'the crystal', the newest nykredit headquarters located in copenhagen, denmark. the geometric form's multifaceted crystalline surface captures and refracts the setting sun and immediate surroundings. transparent and visually light, the structure is centrally located and freestanding within the complex's plaza with views of the harbor and existing 'glass cube', the company's primary building. the encompassing reflecting pool mirrors the reflective surfaces and drifting clouds overhead.

Post 1824: love these, so smooth looking!

Post 1827: spanish cities aren't my favorite, but bilbao seems like it'd be one of the few places i'd love to settle down in

Post 1832: i love the main tower, but that's it. we don't need a whole species of them bunched together. it looks like it'd be a nice tower in a very compact city, like NY. sure beats that pelli whale going up in midtown. at least the esb would have good views of a good neighbor.

Post 1833: love it, so simple and clean.

Post 1835 When it first started loading I was like, this looks good. But then i saw the rest... i love the vertical-ness of the floors, but those diagonal rods look ugly.
