Paul Stallan Studio’s response to the competition brief for the Federal National Council’s New Parliament Building Complex was to promote a monumental Islamic architecture that had both gravitas and iconic potential. A huge cubic form was proposed that held within it a major assembly space suspended within an enormous courtyard.

Landscape Architecture: Jardins de l’Arche by AWP at La Défense, Paris

Earlier in July, AWP, Office for Territorial Reconfiguration (Marc Armengaud, Matthias Armengaud, Alessandra Cianchetta), was named the general contractor for the landscaping of the public spaces and follies situated at the foot of the Grande Arche. The site, located near the future Arena 92 in the Jardins de l’Arche neighborhood, serves as a space for genuine interchange between La Défense and Seine-Arche. The urbanists at AWP are also responsible for guide plan for Defacto that will enhance the urban area of La Défense’s business district.

positioned upon an island within the OCT bay in shenzhen, china, the 'shenzhen clubhouse' designed by new york-based practice richard meier architects is nearing completion. upon traversing a pedestrian bridge across the water, guests pass through a promenade lined with and allée of trees towards an arrival court and central fountain. within view of the urban and cultural district across the water, the internal spaces are radially arranged within the sweeping external form offering views of the city. clad with signature white metal panels, daylight filters through the overlay of solid panes and voids producing an interplay of light and shadow through the skylights and vertical screens.

A circular complex from Kalarch INC provides leisure and recreational facilities for residents in an urban district of Shanghai.

Zhangpu Aquatic Center, commissioned by the Kunshan Municipal Government, is a sport complex that contains three different swimming areas, two heated swimming pools for training and competition and one outdoor swimming pool for the recreation purposes. The structure is solved with reinforced concrete and steel trusses, the facade is designed with U-profiled glass panels that acts as good thermal insulation and create a soft, light and wavy skin.

Spillman Farmer architects completes ArtsQuest Center for Performing Arts on former Bethlehem steel brownfield

The Bethlehem Steel Corporation, based in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, was one of the most powerful companies of the Industrial Revolution. While the Bethlehem plant closed its operations in 1995, the iconic 285ft blast furnaces still stand. Today, these historic ruins preside over the largest privately owned brownfield in the US, which is now being transformed into a dynamic, sustainable, and livable mixed-use community. Anchoring the redevelopment at the foot of the historic blast furnaces is the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks.

The ArtsQuest Center is a hybrid building: part performance space, exhibition venue, art cinema, education center, and cultural landmark. Its 68,000 sq ft of space includes a 450-seat venue for live musical performance, a two-screen state-of-the-art cinema, and a number of multifunctional performance and community venues. The building plays a critical role in the creation of vibrant public space in the urban core, hosting over 300 live performances a year, daily art cinema screenings, indoor and outdoor concerts, and arts festivals throughout the year.

This week the Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) announced that it had received six tender proposals from pre-qualified contractors for the long-awaited Midfield Terminal Building at Abu Dhabi International Airport. This future addition to one of the world’s fastest growing airports will sprawl over 700,000 sq m and initially handle 27-30 million passengers each year.

Site preparation and foundation works began in 2010 and construction of the Terminal itself is planned for the second quarter of 2012. The Midfield Terminal Building will become the home of Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates.

The Weald and Downland Gridshell is a sustainable building originally designed to provide a space for hosting workshops and to sell artifacts. Located within The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum in Sussex, England, its innovative undulating shape is made from local green oak laths bolted together as a framework. Designed by Edward Cullinan Architects, with structural engineers Buro Happold and the Green Oak Carpentry Company, the Downland Gridshell building is a fantastic self-supporting wooden structure, and is one of only four of its kind in the whole world.

The Olympia 66 retail development is located at Wusi Lu in the Xigang District, one of the most prominent commercial avenues in Dalian. The site is adjacent to the Olympic Square, which is one of a sequence of squares located on the main avenue of Zhongshan Lu. To the east is People's Square the home of the municipal government, and to the west is Xinghai Square.

london-based architecture firm foster + partners have officially completed the mclaren production center, the second building designed for the company located by the rural fringe of london. the 34,5000 square meter facility will contain all future mclaren road vehicles. the assembly plant is a state-of-the-art production space which is connected to the existing technology center via an underground walkway which exhibits interactive installations. both buildings share a common language in architectural details and materials with aluminum cladding tubes and a circular glass drum mimicked beneath the overhang of the roof canopy.

This project was designed for Cheraga, Algeria by Barcelona-based DNA Architects. Le Far du Grand Vent adapts itself to the surroundings. It follows the forms of the urban surface given by the road passing by and the built areas around. The building itself reminds of a ship due to the angular basis which is considerably bigger than the upper part of the construction. It could also remind of melting ice, backed by the presence of the sea nearby. The floors are separated on the exterior, with angular edges, giving the impression of fragility and that the huge integrating parts could fall apart.

tokyo-based practice kengo kuma + associates has recently completed the 'café kureon' in toyama, japan. encompassed with a meadow, the 197 square meter restaurant appears to minimally touch the ground. the internal dining space is contained within a glass enclosed box and the exterior is wrapped with interlocking lengths of timber. placed perpendicular to each other in a grid-like arrangement, the structure appears visually inverted with continuous layers at the roof line and compact footprints for supports connecting to the foundations.

How can you condense more than ten thousand years of civilization into a single project that faithfully tells the story of a great nation? University of British Columbia’s CIRS Building is a Living Eco Laboratory in Vancouver

The Center for Interactive Research on Sustainability at the University of British Columbia opened earlier this month and it's currently working at full steam to advance research on sustainable building design. Built to exceed LEED Platinum and Living Building Challenge standards, CIRS was designed through a collaboration between Perkins+Will and UBC to focus on green building design and operations, environmental policy, and community engagement. The living eco laboratory is net zero, powered by solar panels, treats its own wastewater, and features a living green roof as well as a vertical garden.

SCAD's new museum rises from an antebellum railroad depot.

“The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Museum of Art is more than a preservation project,” said architect Christian Sottile, “It is where a new structure gives life to the old.” Situated in the historic landmark district of Savannah, Georgia, the 82,000-square-foot gallery space—including an outdoor theatre and event terrace— just two years ago was the site of rubble. The destitute walls of Savannah gray brick, some precariously leaning and others morbidly collapsed, were a relic of the country's last remaining antebellum railroad complex.

Germany’s Inzell Skating Stadium Features a Roof That Radiates Cold Back Onto the Ice

Anyone who loves winter sports is sure to dig this newly renovated speed skating stadium in Inzell, Germany. Topped with a high-performance, clear span roof, the Max Aicher Arena was designed through a collaboration between Behnisch Architekten and Pohl Architekten to minimize energy use while maintaining perfect conditions on the ice. The facility underwent an extensive renovation last year in order to host the World Single Distant Speed Skating Championships in 2011, and then it scored its own gold medal at the 2011 World Architecture Festival when it was crowned World Sport Building of the Year.
